Callin

By my fifth day here, I would call Annalise a friend.

And I'd call Matt, my therapist, tolerable.

I'd call my memory stubborn.

I haven't had any memories since that first day, in Matt's office.

He asks me about it every day in our individual sessions, and I've gone over it so many times that I know I'll never forget a single tiny detail.

At breakfast today, I get my customary Lucky Charms, and meet Annalise at 'our' table.

Nobody else ever sits with us.

I'm even unpopular in the rehab centre, go figure.

Though I guess I have friends now, with the boys of One Direction and Annalise.

“You are about a million years away” Annalise says, after I spend at least five minutes staring at my cereal.

“What?” I say, nearly falling out of my chair.

Annalise laughs.

“You remember something?” she asks.

“Nope” I reply. “Just thinking. Would you consider us friends?”

“I'm 99% sure we've had this conversation before” she replies. “I haven't got memory loss, remember? Crazy schizophrenic here. The answer is still yes, by the way.”

I smile slightly.

“Sorry” I say, “I'm the one with memory loss.”

“Nice try” she says. “Retrograde amnesia doesn't impair new memories.”

“I love it when you talk medical to me” I say, which makes her laugh.

She then takes a bit out of her soggy waffle, today's cafeteria 'speciality'.

I'm just glad she's eating.

“I think you're flirting with me” she says, after she swallows. “Which I don't entirely understand, seeing as you have five undeniably sexy popstars waiting at home for you, at least one of which making the probably arduous drive here just to see you again next week.”

I wink at her.

“Maybe you're more my style” I say, though she knows I'm joking. “Any anyway, I don't think Liam's coming just for me. I showed you his letter, he asked way too many questions about you.”
