3 years on the street teaches you a lot. Pick your fights carefully. Be armed always. Trust no one. You're on your own, the only person that can always help you, is you.
My watch beeps, signaling that my 16 hour shift is about to start. I sigh as I slip my black sweatshirt over my grey tank-top. I slide on my blue jeans. I tie my black combat boots that I found next to a dumpster 6 months ago. Once I'm ready for my shifts I climb out the window and down the fire-escape.
I have an 8 hour shift at the bookstore named Two Stories and then a 5 hour shift as a secretary to Mrs. Stark. It will be my first day being her assistant. As I walk up to Two Stories I put my chocolate brown hair into a messy bun.
"Cass, it's nice to see you again." Janice, the owner, says. "I'm just here for my shift Janice." I say. "Doesn't mean that it's not nice seeing you." Janice says, My lips tilt a bit into a smile. Janice is the nicest lady I've ever met. Though I guess that isn't saying much due to my past. She's the nicest lady you'll ever meet. "Go ahead and shelf those books over there." She says pointing to a cart that's full of books. "Yes, ma'am." I say walking over to the blue shelf cart. It's 30 minutes until opening.
"How's school going?" Janice asks as she organizes the cash register. "Fine. The new material is actually pretty easy." I lied. I've told her that I'm homeschooled since public school is in session during my shifts. "How're your parents?" Janice asks again. "Mom's fine. She's been busy." I lied again. I haven't seen my mom or dad since I was 5. "My granddaughter was born last night." Janice says. "Oh, that's awesome." I say. She smiles and nods. "They're all the way in Canada but I'll see them the next time I visit, which is a few months away." Janice says, I nod.
At 10am, a group of people came in. Janice is upstairs in her office doing something. I can handle the shop on my own while she's busy.
"Tony, why are we here?" A woman with chin-length red hair asks. "Shush spider." A man with brown hair, in a nice looking suit says. "Welcome to Two Stories. Is there anything I can help you with?" I ask. "Do you happen to have any books on robots and AI's?" the man asks. "Yes, if you'll just follow me. I've actually used these books to create my own AI. They're incredibly helpful." I say walking over to our technology and programming section.
"BAILEY, what time is it?" I ask. "It is 10:03am Ms. Cass." The computer automated voice says. The group is shocked. "T-that's impressive." The man says, "Thank you. Here you are." I say as we reach the section. "Let me know if I can help you with anything else." I say before walking away to shelf more new books.
"BAILEY, please play Blank Space by Taylor Swift please." The song plays and I softly sing it. Barely over a whisper.
The group walks over. They each have one or two books. They set them on the counter, I walk over and begin scanning them and bagging them. The man, known as Tony, puts down 2, 100 dollar bills. "Did you find everything alright?" I ask, they all nod, I bag the books and take the money. Typing into the register and giving him 5 dollars in change. "Have a nice day!" I call out as they leave with their bagged books.
AN: Yes! First chapter is out! I won't really have that much of a schedule. I'll basically just publish a new chapter whenever I feel like it. Only a bit of this is prewritten so if you have any ideas feel free to comment them. Vote only if you like it. Let me know what you thought. What do you think of Cass? I hope you guys are as excited for this book as I am. Stay hydrated and have a lovely day/night! Ms. CookieLlama
