Chapter 7

The cold, hardwood floor of your apartment stung your feet as you paced back and forth in your living room. You had contacted all of your friends to ask if they were available to go out tonight to celebrate Charlie's birthday. However, with only a few hours to round up a few of your friends, your luck was slim, especially since it was already Friday.

Looking down at your 'favorites' in your contact list, you tapped the screen frantically, trying to think of anybody else that would seem the least bit interested to go out with you. You had already called Elijah, Beatrice, and Mina. However, they were all either too tired to go out or already had plans.

Usually, Shoshanna was the first person you called when you were looking for a fun night out, but it didn't seem like the smartest choice to invite her, especially since the unspoken tension that had risen between Adam and you. But regardless, it didn't matter if you invited her or not because she called you earlier in the week to tell you that Jude and her were taking a weekend trip to the beach. You could tell she was excited because she sent you pictures of outfits to wear all week long.

Deep down, you were really happy for both of them and knew that Shoshanna would have tons to tell you on Sunday, after returning from her trip. To be honest, you were looking forward to having some girl time with her after the hectic work week that you both had experienced. Even though you weren't able to convey to Shoshanna all of your problems, especially those that concerned her brother, you missed her like crazy.

As you came back to reality, your fingers stopped tapping the blank screen on your phone. There was one last person that you could reach out about tonight. Quickly, you unlocked your phone and scrolled to your next-door neighbor's number.

Kris

As you hunched over your kitchen counter island, you pressed the phone to your ear and waited for Kris to pick up. However, it went to voicemail after a few rings. You tried her a second time.

Voicemail. Again.

It was unlike Kris not to pick up her phone since she worked as a successful clothing designer and would usually pick up every call in the case that it would be a client. You pressed the edge of the phone up against your lip, furrowing your brows, and pushed off the countertop to walk across the hall to knock on Kris's door.

You heard loud music coming from inside the apartment, so you knew she was there, but questioned why she didn't answer. Pressing your ear to the door, listening closely to the music playing inside her house, you recognized that Kris was listening to Erykah Badu.

That could mean one of two things: sex or heartbreak.

The door of the apartment flung open, allowing the music to fully reach your ears. Immediately,  you noticed the song playing was "Next Lifetime," which was making you lean towards heartbreak. Especially, since Kris looked like she hadn't showered in a few days and her hair was wrapped up in a scarf while she was dressed in baggy sweats and a wrinkled white tank top. You tilted your head in genuine concern as you noted that her eyes were puffy, probably from crying.

"Hey...you okayyy?" You questioned Kris softly.

"What gave it away?" She responded in a monotone voice, arching her brow.

"Well...between you not answering my calls and the Erykah Badu music... kind of hard not to notice something's wrong." You shrugged to the side. Kris laughed under her breath, resulting in a half-lived smile. She gestured for you to come in.

You noticed her kitchen was a mess, stacked with dishes. Her clothes were carelessly spread on the floor like she had walked out of them without bothering to pick them up. It wasn't usual for her place to look like this, so you knew that whatever was going on with her was bad.
