Dating Ransom Drysdale was no easy task. The man knew how to push your buttons, how to play you like a goddamn fiddle. And he reveled in it, loved the way he could get you to do whatever he wanted. If you were being honest, you kind of liked it too. Liked the way he stoked a fire under you, how he could get you to do anything. But, other days, most days really, it frustrated you to no end to see him just hurdle the worst things at you.

Today was a bad day. A bad week. You hadn't heard from Ransom in so long, which fucking hurt. You'd been dating for eight months now. You thought you at least deserved to know if he was going radio silent, that it had nothing to do with you. Turns out, you didn't. Every call, every text, every voice message all went unanswered.

At first, you thought he was just busy. He'd started doing research for Harlan's new book, and that was taking up a lot of time. But, as the day turned into days, you became more concerned, until it was all bubbling over.

You found yourself standing outside of his house, by your car, wondering if you should go up to the door and let yourself in, demand to know what his deal was, or if you should just get back in your car and drive away, mend your broken heart in solitude.

Finally, though, you decided you wanted answers.

When you walked into the house, you heard shouting, so you followed the sound of Ransom's voice. He was in his office, on the phone with someone, yelling, "That is my choice! My decision to make, not yours! Not anyone elses's! Mine!"

He ended the call, slamming his phone on his desk, before rubbing his face in his hands.

"You okay, Ran?" you asked, your voice small.

He looked up at you, his cold eyes softening. "What're you doing here, petal?"

"You been ignoring me. Wanted to see if...If you still wanted me."

"Oh, of course I still want you!" That was the fastest he'd ever answered any of your questions. He pushed his seat away from the desk, motioning you to come over. "C'mere, petal."

You walked over, before propping yourself up on his lap. "Why've you been ignoring me?"

"I didn't mean to, petal. Really. I lost track of time, and—" He paused. "You know what? I'm gonna do this now."

"Do what?"

But he just picked you up, had you standing on your feet, as he fell to his knee. He reached over, grabbing a small velvet box from his desk drawer, and presented it to you—a gorgeous diamond ring. Perhaps the most expensive piece of jewelry you'd ever seen.

You gasped, your hand flying to cover your mouth.

"I wanted to make this more special, take you out somewhere nice. Spoil you rotten. But, I can't wait any longer. Every day where your not my wife is a day wasted. All I want in this world is for you to be mine, and me to be yours." His blue eyes were shining, and you were suddenly aware you'd never seen Ransom cry before. "Please, say you'll marry me."

"Of course I'll marry you," you cried.

He slipped the ring on your finger, tossing the box to the side, before rising back up to his feet. He cradled your face in his hands, pulling you into a kiss. "God, I fuckin' love you."
