Selene Hilal prided herself on the morbid curiosities she had collected over the past seventy-five years—halls of blue-veined black marble, floor-to-ceiling windows segregated with priceless antiques—expensive vases, renowned paintings, spoils of war, preserved wolf teeth and claws in glass cases...

Castle Night was the stronghold of the Moon pack. Long ago it had been a lone mansion built by her power-hungry parents, but she had made it into a compound of buildings dedicated to aspects of an entire werewolf pack's lives, including the nursery, living quarters for each hierarchy, and, most importantly: the harem.

The Luna was currently entangled between two females, both beautifully chocolate-skinned from the Lovell pack, one as slender as a sylph, the other gifted with generous curves and rolls. Their lips and hands roamed the planes of Selene's own body, smoothing over the soft mound of her belly—she liked to eat her fill—, naughty fingers applying gentle pressure on the tender flesh between her legs. Their sweet breath warmed Selene's throat, their soft moans, "Me first," only swelling her ego, strengthening the knowledge of her absolute control over the two Omegas she'd claimed from the extensive collection of her harem. There were males and females alike awaiting a visit from her from the rooms of the compound she had expanded upon over the decades to grow her dynasty, to satiate her unquenchable libido.

The females' bare limbs were a perfect tangle, oiled with sweat and slick from their heats, their pants and whimpers like wounded wolves, begging for release from an uncaring master. Selene was their master, and they each wanted to be her next catch to bear her more pups.

Selene's emotional attachments were impartial to the Omegas she selected, having grown less over the years. Perhaps it stemmed from the Contest, that it was in her best interest not to form any sort of attachment that would hinder her lead. But there was also the infuriating fact that she simply had never had any attachment. There had been no connection, no feeling, no gravitation toward one wolf that sang to Selene's soul. There was no link she sensed that formed the potential for a mating bond. She had plenty of Omegas who satisfied her physical needs, but not one who satisfied her heart and soul.

At least, not in the past seventy years.

One of the Omega's hands found the sensitive spot on Selene's inner thigh, and it broke her daze. She snapped her teeth at the slim one to back off. "I choose you," she said to the buxom one.

Twin growls, one of triumph, the other, jealousy. Selene let the slim one remain beside them, even as she sulked, while the other topped Selene only to allow Selene the butterfly-tickle of lips upon skin to calm her. But this Omega's wide hips would give a greater chance of Catching over the other's lithe form. When they both couldn't stand the urge any longer, Selene flipped the female over and mounted her.

The knotting lasted half an hour, the room echoing their pants and moans and eventual outcries of climax. When the deed was done, Selene collapsed onto her back. Her immortal body ached with ebbing energy but was alive with euphoria. Gods, could she ever tire of such bliss?

The answer was most likely no.

The plump female purred, nuzzling the juncture of Selene's neck and shoulder, where her scent gland was throbbing beneath the surface of her skin. Every muscle went taut. It was an intimate place, and an even more intimate promise between particular wolves not to be taken casually. This Omega was making a move and it was utterly inappropriate.

The Omega yelped when Selene's jaws closed just an inch from her face, scrambling backward, features slipping toward her wolf form. "Don't," the Luna snarled. "Get out. Now."

The females escaped, clinging to one another, whimpering, through the only door out of the room. They were still naked and it was up to the temperaments and personalities of Castle Night's occupants to judge their hurried pace out of the harem.

Sometime later, Selene found herself padding aimlessly through the corridors of the central building. A courtyard open to the summer sky, it was ringed with two stories of doors to bedrooms for Omegas. Its purpose was for mingling and letting older pups play in the grass.

She paused to observe young wolves yipping and tumbling over one another while their mothers or fathers watched over them with affection. One of them was trotting across the space and noticed her. His face lit up and Selene's frown deepened. She turned to keep walking, but the little male bounded up behind her to match her pace.

"Mother," he began, reaching for her hand.

"I am not your mother, Luan," she interrupted, focusing on her path ahead and ignoring his plea for affection. "I am your sire. You know that. I do not have time to play. I have better things to do."

Her offspring made a noise that suggested the formation of a pout, and Selene heard bare skin scuff the marble, which suggested that Luan had planted his feet. She halted, closing her eyes and inhaling a prayer to the gods she didn't believe in for patience, before turning to him.

"You're mean," he announced the moment their matching gazes met. Rarely did any of her offspring carry the immediate traits of their original pack—instead of white hair and green eyes of the Magnolia pack or pale blue eyes and cloud-gray hair of the Sky, any pup born into the harem of the Moon pack possessed Selene's black hair and blue eyes.

Her smile was fanged, but he was a wolf, too, therefore unimpressed. "I know I'm mean. Being mean is fun. Go back to your mother before I drag you back between my teeth."

Luan bared his in childish defiance. "My mom died."

Selene blinked, realizing that his little sound wasn't a pout but a sniffle. She was an immortal Luna; her Omegas were not. They all died off eventually. After they reached the age they could no longer bear offspring, she freed them from the harem to live however they wished. And as long as their pups were recorded into the book of names, they could take them as well. There were so many names, so many concubines and children, that they blurred in Selene's memory as soon as she had her way with them. But if any member of her pack died, she would know—and she would resuscitate her heart long enough to properly mourn.

"What do you mean, she died?"

"The Sun Alpha killed her this morning."
