Suddenly it felt as if an earthquake came. The ground shook ever so slightly and then Amelia saw what was happening. The tall walls she had noticed earlier, started moving towards each other so they could interlock.

"Wh-what's going on?" Amelia asked the guys.

"It's sundown, the walls are closing"

"Closing?" Just after Amelia asked that, the poles from one wall entered the holes on the other, closing them for the night.

"What the hell just happened?" Amelia asked Chuck since Alby left right after the walls closed.

Chuck chuckled ( thats weird )
"You are just like Thomas" he said as he remembered Thomas asking the same questions yesterday.

"But yeah, closing. Everyday at sundown, the walls close to protect us from these creatures— grievers, that live in the maze. and let me tell you, you never want to meet one of them."

Thomas and Amelia heard him explain but the only thing that seemed to have caught their attention was the mention of the maze.

"The maze?" Thomas and Amelia asked together for the second time this day.

"Wha- what maze? I never said maze" Chuck said, nervousness evident in his voice.

"You said the grievers lived in the maze" Thomas reminded Chuck

"What? I never did?"

Thomas and Amelia gave him a look.

"Fine! Out there is the maze. We believe there is an exit somewhere that will help us escape. Everyday runners go out there when the walls open and map out the maze. but you see its not that easy, we have been mapping for 4 years now but the problem is, the maze changes every night and that is what's making it so hard to find a way out. The grievers, that I mentioned before are creatures who live in the maze and only come out during the night. The are scary monsters. They have killed a bunch of Gladers too. So, every night, the walls close so that the grievers dont enter the Glade." Chuck explained, instantly regretting giving away so much information.

Thomas and Amelia were processing the information.

Chuck cleared his throat and said, "You both should get ready. We are having a party for you two."

Before any of them could ask another question, Chuck left.

Both of them glanced at each other and then turned towards the huge walls.

"You feel it too, right?"
"Yup. We have to go out there"

A moment of silence and then Amelia commented, "Im pretty sure we share a brain cell"

Thomas laughed and then they both went to get ready for the party.

— time skip to the party

When Thomas and Amelia got to the party, it didn't take them long to find Newt and Minho. The two waved them over and the new members joined them.

When Amelia sat down, she asked, "Why the party?"

"We do one to celebrate the newbie." Newt answered and Amelia nodded.

Throughout the party, the four of them sang, danced, ran around and Thomas and Amelia even puked when they drank frypan's stew. But they got used to it after a few drinks. They had a lot of fun. It was as if they had known each other their whole lives.

— later that night

"So, how was your first day?" Minho asked Amelia as they sat on a block of wood, drinking frypan's stew.

"Tiring" Amelia replied. And as if on cue, she yawned. Minho laughed a bit.

"You should get some sleep" he told her as he patted her back. She nodded and wished the boys a goodnight then headed for her hammock, but not before looking at the maze walls one time.

When she got to her hammock, she noticed Chuck was still awake.

"Hey Chuck"
"Hey"

The kid sounded sleepy, but she had an important question to ask.

"Chuck?" Amelia began
"Yeah?" He answered
"How do you become a runner?"
