"Staying with Daddy was amazing! We had movie night, he read me a story, he gave me new toys... Mommy, my room is huge! Uncle Chubbs' son stayed over—he seems fun, but he mostly plays video games and does boy stuff. Daddy said he's gonna get me a playmate so I don't get lonely whenever I visit!"
Áaela rattled off, bouncing in place as she spilled every tiny detail.
It had been like this since her dad dropped her off that morning. She wanted to tell me everything, even the smallest moments, and I didn't mind. Honestly, I was grateful she'd come back safe and sound. Aubrey's life was hectic, and with that big house of his, I always worried a little when she stayed over.
"Alright, pumpkin,"
I said, guiding her toward the kitchen.
"Eat up your cereal. You can fill me in on the rest of the fun once you're done, deal?"
She nodded eagerly, spooning cereal into her mouth with intense focus. I grabbed a loaf of bread and started fixing myself a sandwich, sneaking glances at her as she animatedly described how Daddy tucked her in.
Then my phone buzzed. A new ping. I froze.
Aubrey.
Part of me stiffened, part of me couldn't help the little thrill that ran through me every time his name appeared on my screen.
I tapped the message cautiously.
Messages
Aubrey🍁: Just got home. You around to talk?
Me: Yeah... now works.
Aubrey🍁: Alright... spill.
Me: Okay... so, I've been seeing someone. It's still new, but I thought you should know—just in case it goes somewhere.
Aubrey🍁: Appreciate you telling me. For real. I hope it works out. 😊
Me: Thanks... I just wanted you to know. Still not sure about introducing him to Áaela yet. 🤔
Aubrey🍁: Smart. Make sure he's solid first. Don't want any drama or clowns around my little girl. 😐
Me: True. Noted. Don't worry—I don't date clowns anyway. Thanks. 🤗
I left the chat after that message. The tension was too thick to ignore, and honestly... I didn't want the drama. God knows Aubrey could get petty if things went sideways.
After breakfast with my girl, we settled on the couch to catch up on some Masha and the Bear. Áaela leaned against me, still chattering, squeezing out every last detail of her weekend at her dad's house.
I smiled, letting her talk. Her little world was pure and uncomplicated, a sweet contrast to the messiness of grown-up feelings. And for those moments, I could just be her mom—no awkward text messages, no old flames, no drama.
5:30pm
Masha and the Bear was still playing softly in the background, the familiar music lulling the room into a calm haze. Áaela was curled up under my arm, fast asleep, her tiny breaths warm against me. I knew it was time to move her off the bean bag and into her bed.
Gently, I lifted her and carried her to her bedroom, laying her down carefully. I stayed a few minutes, brushing a strand of hair from her face and watching her chest rise and fall with each soft breath, making sure she was truly asleep.
Once I was satisfied, I quietly slipped back downstairs to start dinner. Just as I reached the kitchen counter, my phone buzzed. Jay.
I smiled, seeing his name, and answered.
