It has been a while, mum

Levi POV

I am back here in the underground because Erwin needed to confirm some documents regarding me and the MPs. It has been 6 fucking years and this still is not settled!? Tch. I hate it here, full of rotten beggars and dirt. AND shitty teacups ( I am still pissed of that time when I finally could afford a teacup and the handle broke on me). Can't believe some of them are still alive. There is grime everywhere and puddles of stale water. Now I have to wash my leather shoes with Windex. Great. But while I am here, I may well visit where I used to live. I have no reason to, just have the urge to do it.

The old brothel has closed down. Now it is nothing but an empty building. No one has occupied my mother's room since she died. I mean, me and Kenny did stay there for a while until Kenny himself got an apartment big enough for the both of us. I kicked the door down and it fell with a loud thud. Everything is in the exact position as last time. I crouched down and picked up my mother's old clothes. They were dusty. One of them had a hole. I looked at my cravat. My cravat was actually made of my mother's dress. I sighed.

Then there was a comb and a pair of rusty scissors. Mum used to cut my hair with those. Come to think of it, she was the one that gave me the undercut. Not at all a bad hairdresser.

On top of that, a wooden bed and a table with a vase. Inside the vase was what was left of flowers. I reminisce the times whenever we had no food to eat, she would just hug and cradle me, saying everything will work out fine. Mum was one of the sweetest people of the underground.

"Look how my son has grown." I saw a woman sitting on the bed. Tears welled up in my eyes. I have mixed feelings. How? "...Mum?" She nodded and opened her hands for a hug. She cradled me like she used to do, with my head to her chest while her hands are wrapped around my head.  "You visited me after all. You are more than what I ever thought you would have ever become." I was just speechless. She was real. I can touch her. What is happening? I am too overcome with shock to do anything.

"You have a while until your commander comes, right? Stay here with me until then. We can talk about all that happened." Mum just smiled at me warmly. I eagerly sat down and talked about what happened. Isabel, Farlan, the survey corps, Kenny. She patiently sat down and listened to every word I said. I swear I haven't smiled that widely in my life, apart from when I first saw the blue sky of course. I don't care how I'm talking to someone that died when I was 6, but that does not even matter.

That moment, Erwin came in. "Who are you talking to, Levi?"  "Tch. Can't you see?"I hissed, pissed off because mum is literally right there. "No. There is nobody here." I was in confusion. I turned to my side. What? Where did mum go? Nevermind. I felt sad. I know she was there, but she left already.

I and Erwin never spoke of me 'talking to myself' again. Was I really talking to a ghost? Who knows? But all I know is that she is watching me from the skies. All to say is, it has really been a while. Let's meet again soon.
