The man crossed his arms, waiting for the nurse to finish writing down his information. "Now, can I go see him?"

Her brows had a slight furrow as she glanced at the computer then back up at him. "I'm afraid Jesse is still in surgery right now."

"Surgery? She told me he was being taken to the hospital and that I needed to come get him," He spoke in frustration.

"She?" The nurse questioned.

He slightly shook his head. "His mother. She was the one that called me and told me to come get him since she's out of town. I wasn't aware that it was that serious."

She tilted her head in concern. "It says here on his file that Mrs. Novak gave permission to proceed with emergency surgery."

"That dumb bitch," He muttered under his breath. "It was hard to hear a word her drunk ass was saying over the phone. She probably won't even remember a damn thing in the morning."

"Sir, your stepson suffered critical injuries in the accident tonight. The doctors are working hard and will do everything they can to ensure recovery. He's lucky to be alive," A serious expression appeared on her face, almost looking like she couldn't believe her what she heard.

I looked over at Vee when her eyes found mine. Her face nearly matched mine with a look of disgust at the man that supposedly was in Jesse's family...his stepdad?

"Right, so, when will he be out of surgery?" He asked with the slightest hint of worry in his voice.

"I'm not sure. It depends on what they find and decide what needs immediate attention. I will update you as soon as I find out anything."

The man let out a long breath. "Okay," He slowly nodded.

"Will you be staying in our waiting area?" She pointed over in our direction as the man turned around to look.

When his cold icy eyes fell on us, they slightly widened in what looked almost like shock, making a layer of goosebumps cover my body. Nix straightened up in his chair, putting his arm around my shoulder. The man didn't stop staring until the nurse spoke up again.

"Mr. Novak?"

He looked back at her. "No, I'll just be nearby. Call me as soon as you find something out."

She nodded once. "Yes, of course. Hopefully, I will hear something soon."

"Yeah, hopefully," He repeated before turning his back to her.

All of us watched him walk away, and just as he was about to exit, he glanced back once more, but this time it felt like he was looking right at me. My stomach did a flip before he quickly disappeared down the hallway.

"What the hell was his problem?" Sam was the first to say anything.

Lily chimed in. "I don't know, but he gave me the major creeps."

"Same," I nodded, feeling nauseous all over again. "Have either of you met him before?"

Kole shook his head. "No, I haven't met Jesse's family before. He never really even talked about them much."

"Or at all," Ryder added.

"I never got to meet them," Vee spoke up. "Jesse told me that he and his parents didn't have that great of a relationship and that it wasn't important for me to meet them. I was trying to get us to have dinner with them before we moved in together, but he refused," She frowned. "After listening to that man, I kind of understand why."
