My back collides with the ground beneath me, the air flies out of my lungs. I lay there, out of breath and hopelessly exhausted. Then the pain spreads like heat from the centre of my spine outward.
Another close call.
Motionless, I ponder the situation I'd found myself in and if there is a way any of it could be avoided. Because if this keeps up, I'm going to get shot.
Refuelled from the rest, I rise again, turn the safety off my gun and plant my feet firmly onto the ground as I stand to face them down. It's too many of them, but that doesn't scare me.
I'm a good enough shot, there's hope.
I steady my hands; the battleground is not the place for unchecked fear nor hesitation. So I acquire my target, line him up and pull the trigger.
He's hit, dips out of sight.
My lips can't help but curl upward, pushing my cheeks towards my eye. I follow that same pattern once more, this time I'm contested, bullets fly past my head.
I spin away, barely. I look across to my left and right, I'm the only one left. How am I the only one left? My mind does a quick calculation. Two mid, one right. That's three versus one. My stomach flips, the fear gurgles, I push it back down. Not yet. There is still hope.
I grit my teeth and tighten my grip on the gun. I had very little ammo and one more chance. So heels dug into the ground, I sprinted out from behind my cover and headed straight for where they were. Gun aimed, firing at them with barbaric precision until all our bodies collided with the grass.
The alarm blared. Game over.
"Rose!" I looked around to see fellow soldiers running towards me with big smiles and open arms. "That was the best game of paintball I've ever played." Eyes sparkling, I grinned back at them, "Another round?"
