[chapter one - lonely home. edited.]

Raven sat in the train compartment, reading a book and ignoring the loud conversations that were happening in the corridors. She was lucky it was empty but knew it was only a matter of time before another student asked if they could share the compartment, so she savoured every moment she could.

The train moved along the tracks quickly as it continuously emitted white smoke from the top. The sun was still high in the sky and its light shone through the window, illuminating Raven's side that was closest to it. Every once in a while, she would look up from her book and find birds joining her on the trip to the castle.

As Raven turned the page of her book, a knock on the glass door was heard. She looked up to see a girl with pale skin and the lightest of blonde hair. The girl had a dreamy look on her face, as though she was here physically, but was wandering off in her own world.

"I hate to disturb your reading," she said in the softest voice Raven had ever heard. "Do you mind if I sit in here?"

"No, go ahead," Raven said, her voice coming out croaky. Human interactions were something she needed to work on.

The girl smiled and took her seat opposite of Raven. "My name's Luna Lovegood."

"Raven—Khiev—Raven Khiev," Raven said, stumbling over her words. "Uh—are you a first year?"

"I am," Luna said, smiling. "Oh, I bet Hogwarts has the best pudding... I can't wait to see what House I get put in... You're not a first year, are you?"

"I'm in my second year," Raven said.

"What's your House?"

"Sly... therin..." Raven trailed off, afraid of what Luna might say about her House.

"That's nice," was all she said. "I don't know anybody who's in that House. I think my mum knew a few people, but she died before I ever got the chance to ask."

"Oh—I'm sorry."

Luna shook her head. "It's fine."

Then it became silent. Raven glanced around the compartment, unsure whether or not she should go back to reading. She fiddled with her fingers and picked at the book that sat in her lap. If she went back to her book, Luna would probably think that she didn't want to talk to her, but if Raven didn't, it would stay awkward.

What do I do? she thought frantically in her mind.

"I'll let you get back to your book," Luna said, smiling. "You look like you really want to finish it."

"Oh, right..." Raven said, opening her book and getting back to the page she was last on.

The rest of the train ride went by quite smoothly. Luna didn't talk to Raven much afterwards, she just asked a few obscure questions before answering them herself and then going back to humming. A girl with bushy hair—known to Raven as Hermione Granger, the girl who was friends with Harry Potter—came asking if the-boy-who-lived was in their compartment or if they had seen him. They both answered no.

Raven didn't know much about the history of the Wizarding World. She only knew that there was an evil wizard named Voldemort (she never said the name aloud in front of other wizards) who wanted to rule the world and enslave Muggles and Muggle-borns. Unfortunately for him, he was killed by a baby and the baby was given a lightning scar in return.

Raven couldn't care less about it though. Yes, she was grateful that the villain was killed and whatever, but she didn't want anything to do with it. She didn't want to be involved in anything that had to do with Harry Potter or any of his friends. Last year, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher was apparently working with Voldemort and was planning on resurrecting him, but Harry killed him in the third corridor that all students were prohibited from going into.
