“D! D, where are you? D?” I called out.
He appeared in a puff of yellow smoke that smelled of sulphur. “I find it odd that you've come searching for me,” he commented, fanning the smoke away with his large, bat-like wings.
“*cough* yeah, about that. I had to talk to the physical manifestation that you have.”
“Oh?” Darkness's long, arrow tipped tail swayed behind him in amusement. “Do go on.”
“You're wrong about me, D. All these thoughts you keep filling my head with? They're not true.”
“Trying to free yourself again, Jewel? We both know I'll break you. I always do.”
I smirked confidently at him. “Try me,” I challenged.
“You don't deserve happiness.”
“I have a husband, a daughter, a sister, five brothers, three uncles, two grandfathers, and a great-grandfather who say otherwise.”
“You're weak.”
“Eau Contraire, I'm actually strong. If I were weak, I would've committed suicide long before now. As for the physical aspect of that statement, I train every day so I can catch up with my family. They'll always be ahead of me, but I can take care of myself.”
D's eyes narrowed, sensing where I was going. “You're a bad mother,” he tried.
“And yet Wren has clothes on her back, food in her stomach, a warm place to sleep at night and a roof over her head. Clearly I'm doing something right.” I countered.
“You have stretch marks on your ass and thighs.”
I shrugged. “Proof I like to eat. Plus, they don't bother Law, so why should they bother me?”
“You have a weird, pear-shaped body!”
“Oh please. I married an ass man. So long as I don't get disproportionate, the more ass the better.”
“You're unattractive!”
I wiggled my left fingers at him. “Married with a child. Obviously someone disagrees.”
Darkness began to look around wildly. I knew he was growing desperate as his powers diminished and he shrank. “You're stupid!”
“I can learn.”
“You're weird!”
“So's my whole family.”
“You're afraid of the dark.”
“Nyctophobia is very common. And my overactive imagination is what's going to make me a great writer one day.” I began to walk towards D as he tried to scramble away. “You see, Darkness, I've made mistakes in the past and I'm going to continue making them. It's inevitable, I'm human. As a demon, you've thrived on my misery after convincing me that that's all I was good at. You were wrong. I'm good at so much more.”
Reaching down, I picked up the now doll-sized demon and stared determinedly into his soulless white eyes. “Mistakes happen. They do not define us. What defines us is what we do about our mistakes. For far too long, I've let myself be consumed by you. No more. You will not stand in my way of moving on with my life.” Dropping Darkness's back on the ground, I held my hands cupped before me. In them, a baby dragon appeared in a puff of white smoke that smelled like honey. “See this little guy? I call him Ray because he's my little ray of light,” I explained while rubbing the green dragon's head. “He's small and weak now, but in time, he will grow bigger and stronger. Eventually, he'll be strong enough to banish you to a small portion of my mind. Neither of you can exist without the other yet this way, I don't have to drown in the misery you constantly cause me!”
Darkness glared up at me from where he sat on the ground. “You'll never get rid of me, Jewel! We've been together too long!”
“I'm not trying to get rid of you, D. Just break your suffocating hold on me.” With that, I punted the small demon as far as I could. The tiny dragon in my arms made a sound that reminded me of Meeko. “I know he'll be back, Ray. But with you and the others by my side, I can handle him.”
