She ran as fast as she could, as she heard the sirens of the police car right behind her . Her breaths came out heavier than expected. The mask on head was the only thing that kept her in disguise or she would have been in jail. She didn't enjoy this life . This life that constantly needed her to go and steal things just to make ends meet . She couldn't possibly go turn herself in, that would mean she would be put into a foster care home. Resulting to the separation of her and her little sister . Emerson loved her sister dearly. She had no other option than this . To steal food , clothes , water just to make sure her sister was satisfied. Others days she was lucky . She would mange to get a loaf of bread , a piece of chicken , water and a small juice bottle for her and her sister . Others days weren't so good. Emerson would have to sacrifice , and go to bed hungry, just so her little sister would be able to go to bed on a full stomach.
She ran faster, deciding to take the left turn hiding inside the empty dustbin she put just in case she got caught . She pulled her black hood over her head and jumped into the bin . She fit perfectly . She was small and skinny for thirteen year old . Suddenly she heard the sirens stop . And footsteps approaching slowly.
She silently muttered prayers, yes she was well aware that , what she doing was wrong but she knew GOD had to understand. He was an understanding GOD after all .
"Dammit the child is gone ,"
"What do you mean she's gone ."
"I said she's gone .let's go" the police officer huffed in anger .
Emerson waited for a little while to make sure the coast was clear. Running to the small shack she had managed to find for her and her sister to stay in , she entered it quietly making sure no one was behind her . She hated leaving her sister alone especially at this time . But she had no choice .
"Gracie my love , please come out ...I'm home ."
The small six year old came out of her hiding spot . Wiping her tears , breaking into a smile at the sight of her older sister . Gracie was a adorable child . Long blond hair . With blue eyes . She looked just like her brother but shared no similarities with her half sister, Emerson . Who happens to be half back and white.
Emerson took out the halved loaf of bread she was able to steal from her hoodie
"I'm so sorry Gracie ..I wasn't able to get much today .." she muttered as tears started to fill her eyes
Gracie walked to her sister , takings the empty hand without the bread , pulling her softly to the small area where they slept . Which consisted of a single mattress and blanket that kept them slightly warm during the night . Gracie sat down patting at the mattress where she wanted Emerson to sit . Emerson sat there . As tears fell past her eyes . She hated this life . She hated that she couldn't do better for her sister . She hated how , she couldn't do what her brother did for them. All these thoughts filled her mind causing more tears to escape her eyes. Cold, little hands wiped those tears slowly, bit by bit
"Emerson , I'm more than grateful for this small loaf you managed to get me . Don't feel bad .,I understand." Gracie muttered softly
She was smart child for her age, she took the small loaf of bread and broke it into half handing it to her older sister .
"Gracie no-"
"Emerson please eat this for me .. you haven't had anything in two days . Please for me ." Little Gracie said her eyes watering slightly
Emerson indulged her little sister into hug as tears continued falling down her eyes
Why did you have to leave Joshua
Was all she could think of
