With the sun shining on my face the next morning was how I woke up. I'd forgotten to close the curtains so the sunlight had slipped through. When I went to check the time, it was almost midday causing me to groan and slam my head back into my pillow.
"Fuck me," I groaned as I closer my eyes for a little longer.
My shift started at four so I had four hours until then. I could sleep for another two then get ready and leave using the remaining two hours but I had responsibilities and I couldn't sleep the whole day.
First, I got changed into the clothes I'd been wearing at home for the past two days then made myself presentable to step out my room. I saw my roommate, Layla, by the stove when I reached the kitchen.
God, I hoped she didn't burn anything.
When I saw the slightly black pancakes off to one side I frowned. At least it had only been two and they weren't so bad that I couldn't eat them.
"Good morning, sunshine, I was wondering when you'd wake up," Layla commented very cheerfully as she, successfully, flipped a pancake.
"Good morning, Layla."
What surprised me most in this situation wasn't that the pancake was perfectly cooked but the fact she'd woken up before me.
"How's your headache?" I grabbed two mugs from the shelf above the sink. "Do you want coffee?"
"Yes, please. And my headache is better. I took another pill this morning. You on the other hand don't look too great, what's wrong? Something happen at the bar last night?"
I shook my head. "I'm just still tired. It was a long shift yesterday. I'm surprised you woke up before me that's a rare occurrence." I grinned, turning on the kettle.
"I know but I woke up craving some pancakes at nine in the morning so I figured why not make some for you and I? I went to the corner shop to buy some whipped cream and strawberries and I also bought toilet paper because there wasn't any left in either bathroom."
I opened the cupboard where I kept the sugar and coffee. "One of us needs to go shopping this weekend."
"I can, if you want. Since I'm not working today nor tomorrow I can do it."
"Be my guest. I have to work today anyway which I'm not looking forward to much but hopefully these pancakes motivate me." I ripped a piece off of one and put it in my mouth.
"Does that Romeo guy still work with you?"
"Yep. For the last seven months almost every day."
She looked over at me with a grin. "You know I gotta meet this guy. He sounds like a nice guy for you."
I snickered at her suggestion. "If you weren't so drunk last night you could've seen him in the car yesterday since he dropped me off."
She looked down at the pancakes cooking with a sad smile. "Romana broke up with me... getting drunk was kinda the only solution I could think of to get my mind off of things. I'm sorry."
I froze and looked at her. "What? She broke up with you?"
"That's what I said."
"Why?"
"She said things weren't working out. That she didn't love me anymore. Which is fine, I understand that happens in relationships but our one year anniversary was three days away. I guess that was what upset me most. I'd already brought the present I was going to get her so now I have to return it. Thankfully I kept the receipt." She had a change of expression as she looked at me. "Actually, you have similar taste so I think you'd like it. It was a Pandora bracelet. Let me go get it for you to see if you like it or not."
