My footsteps echoed the pavement. I didn't know where I was going but I knew to keep running no matter what. I ran for about an hour before stopping. I tried to steady my breath and gasp for air. I didn't know where to go and hideout for the night. I was still in my pink polka dotted pajamas. I searched out the area where I was at and checked the street name. It read Panshaw Avenue. I smiled because I remembered when I was about 6 years old coming here at times to the Panshaw MarketPlace, it was by the docks where all the boats and cargo ships ported. There were delicious and fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, wheat, grains and meat. It was always busy and full. And there was always a dessert stall where they had these amazing apple turnovers that you could sample. My mouth watered a bit before I realized that I was in a food daze. I stood there as I remembered there was an abandoned stall that we used to play shopkeeper at. I wandered the area in search of it hoping it was still there. To my surprise it was. My body overflowed with joy. I ran over to the stall and checked it out with the help of the street lights.
"Don't see any bugs and this is the best I got. I just wish I had a pillow and blanket but I guess I'll make do without" I said, sighing.
I struggled a bit to pull the stand and turn it to face some crates that were close by. Leaving a small opening for air and an entrance/exit. I used the crates to block me off just in case anyone was to come around. I crawled through the opening under the stand where they stored supplies and laid down peeking through, staring at the night sky. I haven't felt this calm in a while. I smiled as sleep fell upon me.
I was woken out of sleep by big trucks driving to and from delivering packages to load onto the cargo ships. The ship's horns echoed in the area as they ported. There was a lot of talking this early in the morning, the sun had barely risen. I was exhausted and turned over to try and get some more rest. It hadn't even been 10 minutes yet when I heard stall owners coming to set up shop for the morning rush. I tossed and turned trying to get just a little comfortable but had no luck.
"So I guess that I'm up for the morning then" I muttered angrily to myself.
I peeked through as I saw people come and go in the early morning market rush. My stomach growled as I grew weak with hunger. I wanted to go to the dessert stall for some free samples but they hadn't set up yet.
"Okay I guess I'll just wait it out, it shouldn't be too long."
5 minutes had passed and I rolled around groaning.
"Ughhh I don't think I could wait any longer" I said in annoyance and peeking to see if the stall was ready.
My mouth almost dropped to the floor. I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought they were playing tricks on me. I rubbed them a few times to confirm. I stared in disbelief and awe. I quickly and subtly got out from the stall making sure no one had seen me. I mean I am still wearing my pajamas so regardless I'll draw attention. I looked over at the fruit stand and saw Jess looking at the basket of apples that were being sold. She had on a red cloak with the same design and fabric like Cynthia's. She turned and stared at me for a few seconds while smiling, before swiftly pulling the hooded part of the cloak over her head and walking away. Dumbfounded, I almost forgot how to walk. I had so many questions running through my mind. Why is she in that old photo album? Does she remember Cynthia? How old is she really? And most importantly what the heck is going on right now? Without haste I began running to catch up to her shouting her name. At this time and moment I could care less about how crazy I looked running after someone in my pjs.
"Jess!" I shouted.
"Hey, Jess, wait up!" I screamed.
"It's me Jess please wa...." the word didn't even leave my mouth yet before I was snatched away.
