Childhood Sweethearts

It was a beautiful day in the Afterglow Savanna. The birds were chirping away, the antelope grazing in the grassy plains, and the residents were busy with their own business or duties. Further down the Savanna was a small village that was run down and small, its residents on the much poorer side. However they too were in a chipper mood as they went about their day, and among them a group of hyena children ran through the streets playing and laughing. One of those children was a small skinny boy who was currently running from another child who was rather upset with him.

"Ruggie Bucchi you get back here right now!"

You shouted angrily as the boy ran away laughing. You had been playing with the other hyenas when the little snot dumped water on you as a prank. And you were not very pleased to say the least. Ruggie looked back at you and shouted over his shoulder to you.

"Come and catch me (Y/N)! Shishishi!"

Ruggie said smirking and laughing his strange but fitting laugh. Narrowing your eyes you forced yourself to run faster, now wanting to catch him more than anything. The two of you continued this game of cat and mouse, passing by other older hyenas who watched you both with amusement. You chased after him huffing a bit. Ruggie always was faster than most so it was difficult to keep up with him. That's when you got an idea. You'd waited till the two of you were passing the local shop to put your plan into action.

"Ruggie look! The shop keeper is selling donuts!"

You shouted. Ruggie turned, blue eyes sparkling at the prospect of getting a treat only to be tackled by you. The two of you went rolling in the dirt, before you'd come to a stop with you pinning him to the ground. Smirking you spoke.

"Ha. I win Ruggie."

Ruggie's face twisted into a pout and he struggled to pin you instead. However he remained in his position and let out a huff causing you to giggle.

"Yeah, yeah you got me. Even if it was in a dirty way."

He mumbled before looking up at you.

"So what are you gonna do now since you caught me?"

He asked. You paused thinking. You weren't as angry as you were before, however you wanted revenge on your trickster of a friend. That's when it hit you.

"I'm gonna make you pick flowers with me!"

You declared. Ruggie's face went red, wanting to protest before he remembered the prank he'd pulled earlier on you and sagged in defeat.

"Fine."

He said in a somewhat huff. You cheered and let him up from the ground, helping him up and dusting yourself off as he did the same. Grabbing his hand in yours you lead him towards the village field where the flowers would be. Ruggie followed behind, dreading his fate as the field grew closer. All too soon the two of you were there and you'd quickly got to work picking flowers, your companion starting as well. You looked over at Ruggie while picking, your mind wandering as you looked back at the flowers you'd picked. An idea popped in your young head and you began to weave the flowers together. Ruggie wasn't paying attention, instead picking out what flowers he'd think you'd like best. As he went to grab a few white ones, he felt something be gently placed on top of his head. His fluffy ears twitched at the sensation of flower petals touching them. Eyes going wide he turned to you to see your bright smile.

"Here! I knew it'd look good on you!"

You chirped sweetly, pleased that your flower crown fit him so well. Ruggie's cheeks burned as he stared at you before turning away quickly. With a quick movement he placed one of the white flowers he'd been picking in your hair behind your own fluffy ear.

"There. Now we both look good. And I'm sorry about getting you wet earlier."

He said embarrassed. You felt your own cheeks turn red before you smiled brightly and hugged him tightly.

"Aww Ruggie! I forgive you!"

You said, happily nuzzling his neck. Ruggie went a bit stiff before slowly relaxing and nuzzling back feeling content. The two of you spent the rest of the day in the field, playing and picking more flowers. As the sun started to set the two of you packed up your flowers and started to head home, else your parents would worry. Arriving in town you quickly spotted your mother looking for you. Not too far from your mother was Ruggie's grandmother who was looking for him as well. As the two of you headed towards your guardians to go home, you turned to Ruggie and quickly gave his cheek a small peck. The poor boy froze as you skipped away with your mother waving at him.

"Thank you for today Ruggie! I had a lot of fun! Let's play again tomorrow!"

You shouted before you and your mother went on your way. Ruggie stood in the street near his grandmother, heart racing for a moment before snapping out of it and quickly going to her to go home. He had no idea why he felt so warm inside nor why his cheeks felt hot but one thing he was certain of was this.

He couldn't wait to play with you again tomorrow and to see your bright smile.
