Tears rolled down Gina Porter's cheeks, sitting in Ashlyn's living room, her best friend's blue sweater kept her safe from the cold draft dancing around the air. Suddenly thankful that she'd never grown into it, she used its long sleeves to wipe her nose. Her heart ached in her chest as she looked down at the open scrapbook on the table, pictures and polaroids decorated the page with their faces in them.

Ricky Bowen was a complete asshole. She couldn't believe she was stupid enough to give him a second chance. When he'd stomped on her heart in sophomore year, she probably should've gotten the message that it was never going to work out. But, how could she say 'no' to his dark curls and charming smile? And, had a special way of luring her in with his delightful snark, serenading her like she was the only girl in the world, and he'd been so sorry.

She hoped he choked on his guitar strings.

The loud chime of the doorbell interrupted her thoughts. After it dawned on her that it couldn't possibly be her mom━she tried to make herself presentable. Rolling off the couch, she used the sweater to dry her face, and she adjusted the top of her ponytail before walking to the door.

She opened the door, and Nini Salazar-Roberts stood on the porch with a ruby red heart-shaped box in her hands. The girl's dark curls fell over her black jacket and the multi-colored scarf around her neck. She stared at her with the biggest smile on her face, and her brown eyes sparkled in the glow of the porch light.

After a shock of silence, Gina adjusted to the sight in front of her and remembered how to speak. "Nina," she stated, surprised. "What are you doing here?"

Nini and Gina were pretty close. Gina wouldn't say they were best friends or anything because there was always something awkward in the air after she started dating her ex. But, they'd grown a lot closer since they met, way back when. Nini was eternally thankful to Gina for introducing her to Jamie━it'd had given her the boost she needed to start taking her music to the next level, and she was finally on track to getting a record deal. Once in a while, they'd talk about their aspirations, and Gina would check up on how everything was going with her music once in a while. Though, she didn't understand what justified her appearance at this time of the night.

"Hey, Gina!" Nini beamed. "Um, I...heard about what happened with you and Ricky. And, I just want to make sure you were doing okay! I know it's late, and I would've done this at school but...it didn't seem like a good time."

"Yeah..." Gina trailed off, looking back to her spot on the couch. "It's still not really a good time..."

It was then Nini studied Gina's face more closely, and quickly noticed the puffy redness in her usually bright, brown orbs. Looking down, she then spotted the tear-stains on her blue jumper. "Oh. I-I'm sorry. Do you want me to leave?"
