ziaHoly shit.
Rafe Cameron.
Sarah's brother.
Rafe fucking Cameron.
Killed her.
"John B, what are we doing at the police station?" JJ asks as Kiara drives the car in front of the familiar building.
John B explained everything. From why Sarah was on the runway, to Peterkin being shot.
She died. And with our luck, the Kooks will figure out a sick, twisted lie to tell in an attempt to blame John B. And we can forget about the gold, and watch our friend be forced into prison for a crime he didn't commit.
"Somebodies gotta tell them what happened." John B unbuckles his seat belt. I lean forward from the back seat of Kiaras SUV and grab his shoulder, holding him back against the old gray cloth.
"John B, are you sure that this is the best idea?" I ask him.
"I'm just gonna be real with you right now. You might end up in the lions den, but you don't go there on purpose." JJ began with his metaphorical words of wisdom. "Just like my old man always told me, you should never go to cops, no matter the circumstance."
"Your old mans an abusive liar." Kie deadpans.
"Not to mention an absolute dickhead who thinks he's better than everybody." I add to Kies very true statement.
JJ just sits back in his seat, quiet and emotionless.
He's never liked talking about his dad. He always tensed up whenever the word "father" was even used around him. I've never liked it either. Neither had any of the Pogues. So whenever someone got a chance to drag his fathers name through the dirt, we grabbed at it, never really thinking about how it might make JJ feel.
JJ had never talked badly about his dad, he just stated facts.
"He makes cargo hides for drug smugglers."
"You know, he has that right jab."
"Apparently the captain frowns on showing up to work shitfaced, as it turns out."
"I agree with JJ." The very high, very enthusiastic Pope says. "Fuck the police."
"You goin' to the dark side now?" I ask him.
"When's the last time the police helped us?" Pope asks.
"Peterkin looked out for me, alright? Tried to, at least. They need to know." John B opened the car door and slid out, starting towards the station. We watched as he walked through the front door.
I allowed my eyes to wander around the area as the car sunk slowly into a sea of quietness.
The cinderblock wall, the parking spot, the pathway I was walking.
"See ya, Z."
I told him not to take the fall. Not to risk the little he had. But he's JJ, so of course, he didn't listen.
"Do you think he's gonna be okay?" I whisper quietly, leaning my head back onto his chest.
"Honestly?" He whispers back, in a tone that only him and I can hear.
"No.." I say wearily. I want optimism. The chance that John B would be okay. I wanted to hear the words that stated he'd be fine. Truth or not.
JJ takes a deep breath in. "He'll be fine." He lies in a way that sounds like he's trying to convince himself of the statement.
