Chapter 1:

It was mid-summer, the evenings creeping in faster, the mornings lazing around longer, the sweet smell of flowers wafting through the air. Children laughing and playing whispers in the distance, couples holding hands and dancing lingers like a reminder I will be forever lonely.

"Hey, you still there?" Lex asks me.

Lex has been my best friend since I can remember, her auburn hair that twinkles in the sun, her hazel eyes that do not fail to change colour every once and a while. She had an amazing sense of humour, laughing at every joke I make, whether it's funny or not, she has the personality which makes you want to change yours.

"Yes sorry, Ice cream?"

We strolled through the high street, over crowed with mums chattering on the phone, while feeding their precious child some crisps.

"Do you every just... stop? Like the world around you stops, you're just stuck there?"

Lexie laughs "No Maddy, that's just you"

I let out a small giggle.

The air seems smaller, less breathable. It smells like vanilla, sweet vanilla being compressed and married to the air.

"We're here" lex let's out an excited Yelp, she loves this place. She used to go when she was little, she would order the same every time.

"One Tutti-Frutti ice cream and a flake please" she requested politely.

"Yes, anything else?" A deep, dominant male voice boomed. Startled, I looked up. He could not have been over 17, yet he was a dream. Dark green eyes, brown middle-parted hair. He must have been wanted by every girl in the town, the whole country even.

"Yes.... a candy floss ice cream please" I managed to stumble out.

Lex must have realised, she let out an meaningful cough, the "please don't fall in love with him" cough.

"That's £3.95 please"

I reached into my pocket and grabbed a five pound note, I passed it to him. His hand touched mine for what must have been seconds, but it felt like hours. My hand and brain worked together and processed everything. The palm of his hands were rough, but on the contrary, his fingers were soft, gentle even.

"Keep the change"

I read his name tag: Leo.

It was unusual, it gave me chills.

Leo.

We grabbed our ice creams and walked to the park.

"Please don't tell me you're already in love with him" Lex mumbled

"Aha, as if. He is mildly attractive though"
