Lake woke up early the morning after the wedding. There was a quick second when she forgot what had happened the previous night. Slowly, her memories flooded in, and she remembers the events of the wedding. It started out disappointing. She found out Mia's dad took the job at Stanford, despite telling Mia he wouldn't. Then, her attempts at getting back together with Felix backfired as he left her on the dance floor. Except, not everything about that night was bad. There was also Lucy. Lucy, the girl who had given her confidence the whole night. Lucy, who spent most of the night low-key flirting with her. Lucy, the girl who Lake low-key flirted back with. Last night took an unexpected turn for Lake when she found herself drinking champagne with Lucy at an abandoned park, which usually she would've found creepy. Then Lucy walked her back to her house and left.
Lake looked at her nightstand, where her phone just buzzed. It was a text from Lucy.
I had fun last night. Do you want to meet up later and talk?
Lake read the text and immediately started freaking out. As much joy and happiness that being around Lucy brought her, the realization that she was not straight made her anxious. She supposed it made sense that she wasn't straight. There was her fascination with Avril Lavigne in middle school, but seriously, who didn't like her. Then there were all the times she flirted with Mia and jokingly said she'd hook up with her. Wait...no! There was no way Lake had a crush on Mia.
Lake thought for a moment, thinking of a label for herself. Straight was obviously out of the picture. Although she wasn't one-hundred percent gay. She was attracted to men, Felix being one example. So what? Then it clicked. Was she bi? It made sense.
Lake said it out loud, "I am bisexual."
She smiled. It felt right. She looked back at her message from Lucy. What did she want to talk about? Did she want to start dating? Did Lake want to start dating? What would everyone in her life say if they knew she was dating a girl? What would her mom think? Lake suddenly knew why Victor freaked out about coming out on the first day of school. That's when it hit her. She needed to talk to Victor.
She grabbed her phone to call Victor. It went to voicemail, so she called again. That call when the voicemail. Lake groaned out of fustration. Why the hell wasn't he picking up? She texted him.
Hey, I need your advice. Call me when you get this.
Lake sighed. She needed someone's advice ASAP. She called the next person she knew could help her. Mia. Except Mia didn't pick up either. Lake was close to throwing her phone threw a windown. She decided she didn't have time to wait around for someone to call her back. It would be best to just talk to someone face to face. Lake got changed, ate breakfast, said an awkward "please don't realize I'm bi" hello to her mom, and left.
She quickly drove to Mia's house with no problems. Okay, so maybe she almost ran over a cyclist. In her defense, that bike came out of nowhere. Lake pulled up to Mia's driveway and rappidly knocked on the door. To her surprise, Veronica opened the door.
"Oh, hi," Lake said. "Is Mia here? I really need to talk to her."
"Um, Mia left town. She's going to stay with her mom," Veronica replied.
"What," Lake exclaimed. "Is this about Stanford?"
Veronica nodded solomly.
Lake sighed, "Okay, if you get in touch with her tell her I want to talk with her."
"I will."
Lake turned back to her car and got in. Before she drove off she tried calling Mia one more time. She didn't pick up. Lake left a voicemail, "Mia! What the hell? You're going to see you mom? Why didn't you tell me, or at least leave me a message? I need to talk to you about something, please call me back."
Lake hung up and drove away, back to her house. It wasn't until she got back home that she remembered the text Lucy sent her. She didn't want to have to worry about that today. She sent a quick text back.
Sorry, my mom is dragging me to her work. Something about getting ready for the future. We can talk later.
