Lake paced back and forward in her room, trying to get ready for her date. She managed to pull together a last-minute plan. She was currently pacing, waiting for it to turn 6:45. That was the time she had to leave to pick up Lucy for their date at eight. She would've left already, but she didn't want to be super early. Lake watched the clock turn 6:43 and decided it was close enough. She ran downstairs and towards the front door.
"Hey Lake," her mom called. "Where are you going?"
"Um, I'm going out," Lake replied.
"With Mia?"
"Um no. With this girl, Lucy."
"Oh, is she a new friend?" Georgina asked.
"Um," Lake hesitated, not sure how to react. "Yeah. She's a new friend."
"Well, have fun. Be safe," she said.
"Thanks, I will be," Lake replied, before bolting out the door. She ran to her car and drove away. Lake pulled into Lucy's driveway and knocked on her door.
"Hey," Lucy said when she opened the door.
"Hi," Lake replied.
They awkwardly stood next to each other for a second, and then hugged.
"Ready," Lake asked.
"Yup," Lucy replied, getting into Lake's car.
Lake made it to the place for their date. Lucy quickly got out of the car.
"Lake, you're amazing," Lucy said. "But never drive me anywhere again."
"Okay, so I might not be the safest driver, but I make great time. This drive was thrity minutes, and I made it in fifteen."
Lucy laughed, "Yeah, speaking of which, where are we?"
"Oh right, I never told you," Lake said. "So, I did a lot of research on where we should go on our date, and I found this botanical garden. The best part is at nine they're doing a live performance with some local band."
"Really, that's awesome," Lucy exclaimed.
"Yeah," Lake grabbed her hand. "Let's go inside."
Lake and Lucy went into the botanical garden. They walked around and looked at all the different flowers, cacti, and other succulents. There were actually a lot of other people looking around. Most of them were couples, and most of those couple were gay.
"There are a lot of gay people here," Lake whispered to Lucy in amazment.
"Yeah, don't you know gays love succulents," Lucy laughed.
"Huh, I didn't know that," Lake replied. "Maybe that's why I was so drawn to this place."
The performance started at nine. Lake and Lucy grabbed some snacks to eat while they watched it. Lake had never heard of the band. She just knew they had their start in Atlanta and have since became famous. Lake ended up liking them.
Ther performance ended at nine-thirty. Lake and Lucy walked back out to Lake's car.
"Do you want me drivng," Lake asked.
"I think I can last one more car trip with you drivng," Lucy replied. "But after tonight, I'm driving us around."
"Okay," Lake replied. "But don't worry. I would never kill my new girlfriend."
Lake drove Lucy back home in a calmer matter. Partially due to the fact that it was dark, and Lake had a hard time seeing.
"How was that," Lake asked when she pulled into the driveway.
"Better, maybe if you keep that up, I'll let you drive me places again," Lucy said.
"No promises," Lake sang.
Lucy laughed, "All jokes aside, I had a really great time tonight."
"I'm glad," Lake replied. "I really like you, and I don't want to mess things up. I kind of freaked out the other day because I felt like we had nothing in common. I thought that if we didn't share the same interests, you might not like me as much."
"Lake, I like you. No amount of differences between us could change that," Lucy said. "Also I kind of got the hint you were grasping at straws to make us similar when you said what you enjoy doing."
"Am I that obvious?"
"A bit," Lucy replied. "Why don't you tell me what you're actually interested in?"
Lake thought about that for a minute. She was trying to think of what she was interested and coming up with nothing. "I don't know," Lake finally said. "I used to say I was interested in fashion, but I think that's just because my mom made me be interested in that. For most of my life I've been trying to please my mom, and become popular that I don't really know what I like."
Lucy nodded, understandingly, "If it helps, I don't think many people know what they like in high school. And you have plenty of time to figure it out. Just try something new, see if you like it."
Lake smiled, "Yeah, I'll do that. Thank you for helping me through everything."
"Yeah, of course," Lucy said. She paused for a second, then leaned in to kiss Lake.
Lake kissed Lucy back. It was sweet. It was romantic. It was everything Lake wanted her first kiss with Lucy to be. When they pulled away from each other, Lake had a stupid grin on her face she couldn't wipe off.
Lucy was also smiling, "I'll call you tomorrow?"
Lake nodded, "I'll be waiting."
Lucy got out of the car, waved one last time at Lake before entering her house. Lake sat in her car smiling. She was excited for her new relationship with Lucy.
