"Victor, can you pass the milk?" Benji asked.
Victor was working at Brasstown with Benji. It was his third shift with Benji since they broke up, and it was still awkward.
"Yeah," Victor said, tossing the milk to Benji, who caught it easily.
Even though they were barley on speaking terms, they were still in sync. Victor turned to the cash register to take the next person's order. Benji made the drink and gave it to Victor.
"I'm checking out," Benji said.
Victor turned around to respond, but Benji was already in the backroom. He shrugged. Benji probably wanted to get out as fast as possible. Victor turned back to the door and saw Rahim walk in. They made eye contact for a couple of seconds before Victor looked away.
"Hey," Benji said, as he walked up to Rahim.
"Are you done for the day?"
"Yup."
Victor watched as Benji and Rahim left Brasstown. He obviously saw them standing next to each other the other day at lunch. He wondered if Pilar made a correct assumption. Were they dating? No, that was crazy. A week ago, they couldn't talk to each other. Still, a lot can happen in a week.
Once Victor's shift ended, he went straight home. He couldn't help but think about what Rahim and Benji were doing together. He shouldn't be bothered by them hanging out. Except, for some reason, he was. When Victor got home, Pilar was sitting on the couch.
"Hey," Pilar walked up to him. "Rahim was being hella weird yesterday, right?"
"Yeah, a bit," Victor replied absentmindedly as he got a snack from the kitchen.
"A bit?" Pilar asked. "Please, he would barley look at me, and I think it's because of you."
Victor scoffed, "Why would this be because of me?"
"Um...I don't know. Maybe because, according to Lake, you guys broke up?"
Victor sighed, "Yeah, we broke up." He was hesitant to tell this to Pilar, knowing she was friends with Rahim.
"Why didn't I know about this?" Pilar asked.
"I don't know. It never came up. And...things got a bit messy."
"What happened?"
Victor looked down, "He broke up with me because he knew we weren't both into the relationship. Maybe Rahim wanted to give me space so he avoided you."
"That's stupid," Pilar rolled her eyes.
"I'm sorry about this," Victor said. "I don't know what to do about Rahim."
"Well, there's a really good chance he also feel awkward about the whole situation. He might also be waiting for you to reach out."
"What, why?"
"Because he might think your in a vulnerable state-and he'd be right-and he doesn't want to talk to you until your ready," Pilar explained.
"Yeah that makes sense. " Victor nodded, "What should I do?"
"Well are you over Rahim? Do you want to be friends with him again?"
Victor thought about it. He did have a lot of fun with Rahim before all the awkwardness. Rahim was right, he really saw Rahim as a platonic friend. Victor didn't want to loose Rahim just because of one stupid thing. "Yeah, I do," He said.
"Then I think you should reach out to him again," Pilar said. "If anything you can get some closure."
Victor nodded, "You're right."
"Yeah, in case you haven't noticed, I'm like really good at giving advice," Pilar replied.
"Don't let it get to your head," Victor laughed.
He got out his phone, and opened his texts with Rahim. He didn't really know what to say. Hey, can we talk? No, too ominous. Can we go out for coffee and talk? No, too much like a date. Victor realized he just had to be straight up. Well, as straight up as he could be.
Hey, the past weeks have been crazy. I know things are awkward between us. I would like things to be un-awkward. Do you want to meet up sometime and talk about things. If you don't want to that's perfectly fine. No pressure. Best wishes, Victor.
Victor felt good about the text so he sent it. He was about to go to his room, but there was a knock on the door. Victor opened the door and Benji was standing there.
