His eyes turned away as he gestured the bartender for two more shots. His evident jawline caught my eye and I had the sudden, abrupt urge to kiss it.
He. Is. So. Beautiful.
“So, Skye,” he turned to me and I cleared my throat; looking around for a few seconds so that I don’t look stupid again, do lost in his beautiful gre- dammit!
“Yes,” I said, looking a couple inch above his shoulder and he turned away to pick his shot glass up, he tilted his head back gulping down another shot and slid the other shot glass toward me and I stopped it and wrapped my fingers around it.
He smiled, but something in his face said that his throat was still on fire. I smiled back at him and gulped down the drink without a pinch of muscle I stared back at him again.
He raised his eyebrows and chuckled.
“You were saying…”
“That you’re beautiful,” he said and his smirk grew out into an actual smile.
I licked my lips, “you’ve had too much to drink is all.”
“No,” he shook his head slightly and looked into my eyes, “you’re pretty, Skye.”
“Well…coming from you-”
“What does that mean?” he weaved his eyebrows together.
“I mean…wow…..uhh…like…-”
I was interrupted when his phone rang. “Excuse me,” he said and answered the call.
I turned to look for Lily, she was so caught up with the nachos and just chuckled at the adorable sight. She always loved food more than her life but I couldn’t ever live like that.
There are two kinds of people; people who live to eat and people who eat to live. I’m not a very “live to eat” kinda person but she totally was that.
“I’m gonna have to leave now,” his voice startled me and I looked at him with s helpless grin.
“Oh…” I said and looked down at the ground.
Of course, he had to live. What did I think? That this is a start of something?
Of course. He had to leave. And has to take his pretty green eyes with him, away from me.
“I wish I could stay,” he said and I looked up at him.
Did he just-
“Yeah….me too,” I said.
“Okay, what about 8 ‘o’ clock tonight, right here?”
The air in my lungs were sucked out by those words he uttered. I desperately gasped for air and failed to take any, even to survive. My throat felt heavy and my heart raced making my chest ache a little.
Oh god.
My sight was blurring out and I could see him getting up from his seat. He was clearly alarmed.
“Lil…Lily….” I managed to get out with slightly parted lips and nothing in my lungs. I could feel the pieces of blackout in my head and the ground pulling me towards it.
“Skye…” I heard his words as darkness took over me after a hand kept me from collapsing on the floor.
The pain shot at the back of my head which forced me to open my eyes. My eyelids felt a little too heavy but I managed to open my eyes. I could feel the soft bed and pillow under me. I stretched a little and tried to sit up but Lily came in running to help me out.
“Hey, hey, hey,” she said as she put a hand on the back of my neck to help me up. “Slow down, hon,” she said and sat down next to my lower waist once I was sitting straight.
I sighed, rubbing my eyes. My head hurt in so many places. I groaned a little in pain until I could feel Lily’s cold hand on mine. “How are you doing?”
“I had a panic attack, obviously I’m not okay,” I joked.
She gave me a look which was a confirmation that she was not up for comedy right now. “I’m sorry,” and looked down with guilt.
“No, Skye. I’m sorry,” she said. “I knew everything you were going through and I forced you into talking to a random stranger.”
“You never forced me, Lily. I did all that myself. You know what a mess I am right?”
“Skye,” she pulled her hand away from mine, “this isn’t a joke! You could have died!”
“Let’s not exaggerate it like that, please?”
“I am not! I’m worried! And you should be too!” she said and sighed.
I didn’t know what to say, so I thought it’s better to stay quiet.
“I love you, Skye. And I want to help you out as much as I can but you can’t be so ignorant! You have to learn to take care of yourself, be responsible. You have to play a part here, too. This isn’t your house anymore. You moved in here with me for a reason! To build a life for yourself and your brother…you have to start taking more care about yourself, hon. Please,” she said teary eyed.
“Lil…I’m so sorry,” I leaned forward and pulled her closer to me and firmly wrapped my arms around her, “I promise I’ll take care of myself, starting today.”
“Now,” she corrected.
I giggled, “now!”.
I looked at the ceiling and wondered about those Ruby eyes I had met earlier today. I might never see them again but, damn! They were mesmerizing. I’ve never done this “love at first”, stuff before and I never will but damn, those eyes could speak a million languages and my heart could fathom every word of it.
And I just blacked out in front of him! Dammit!
This shouldn’t be happening! I’ve only met him once!
“And,” Lily pulled off and stood up, “that Harry?” she stated like she’d read my mind. My heart started racing again at the mention of his name. “He’s nice,” Lily nodded with a smile.
“What are you-”
“Believe me,” she smiled wider this time, “he’s lovely.”
“What are you saying?”
“He helped me get you into a cab and home. He was worried the whole time. He asked me to give you his number once you’re okay.”
“Oh….” I looked up at her with hope in my eyes.
Nobody at my home never bothered to even consider what I felt about certain things but here he is some stranger, with psychedelic eyes, just making me feel butterflies without even doing anything. What is this guy?
This is so not me. But I can’t stop thinking about him.
Harry.
I wondered what his last name was.
I rubbed the paper between my index and thumb finger. The digits on it could get me the man who’s been in my head since this afternoon or it could show me off as some desperate piece of shit and to be very honest, I didn’t care about any of it.
I just picked my phone up and started dialing the number. My heart racing and the muscles in my chest clenching with anticipation.
“Good night, babe,” Lily shouted from the other room. “Wake me up if you need anything, I’ll be right here.”
“Yeah, okay. Good night,” I said and brought the phone up to my ears.
It took a while for him to answer but he finally did.
“Hello?” he said. His voice was raspier than what I remembered. He almost sounded like a creepy villain from a 90’s thriller movie.
“Hey,” I said softly, holding back a part of my voice with all of my excitement right in my throat.
“Who is this?” he said and I heard a little bit of ruffling and shuffling and I imagined he shifted in his bed.
“Hey, it’s me…um…Skye,” I said and clenched my hands into tight fists, “I’m so sorry I woke you up I didn’t mean to annoy you at this hour.” I instantly regretted every single part of the conversation, “maybe I should go.-”
“No, no, no, Skye. Oh, love, are you alright? You didn’t look okay in the restaurant.”
I had stopped listening to him after he called me “love”. His deep, now thickly raspy, voice added a little more beauty into the word itself. A smile crept up on my lips but I fought it like I wasn’t ready for it yet. I know it’s common for the British to address people by the words “love”, “babe” etc., but Americans are not used to hearing it.
“Um…Skye? You there?”
“Oh! Um..sorry.”
“How are you feeling now, love?”
“I’m okay but been better,” I sounded surprisingly calm in my head.
“What happened to you back there?”
“Oh um….it was nothing…you don’t have to worry about it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I am.”
“I was so freaked,” I heard him chuckle under his breath.
That was followed by blissful silence. We didn’t feel uncomfortable or awkward. The silence was so calm that it was the most peaceful thing I’d felt in a while. The silence felt like a void where I could vent.
Just vent the fuck out.
But I didn’t want to scare him away, obviously. I’d be a fool to take this opportunity to make it all about me and my problems.
“Harry?” I finally broke the silence.
“Yes, love?” he said as I heard him sniff lightly.
“What was it you told me? 8 ‘o’ clock you said?”
He laughed lightly like he suppressed a big laughter right in his chest. It made sense, it was almost 11:45 and he might be living with people. And laughing at this hour is not something normal people usually do.
“Wear your favourite dress, love,” he said.
My body smiled when I heard him say it. It felt like my body was lit up in the most celestial way possible. I felt like I was shining like that one memory from childhood that always stood out and calmed you. Like that rare breeze of cool air in summer.
“Bye, Skye,” he spoke, raking me out of my rather beautiful session of feeling golden.
“Bye, Harry.” I said and hung up.
