"Hey, what are you doing in my cell?" I asked as I returned from my bath.

"Oh, sorry. I was just looking for my lost ring." He said.

"In my cell?" I asked. The walls weren't barred. There is no way his ring would end up in mine.
And he is a new cell-mate. One who has done an unpardonable crime. Well, whoever is here has done an unpardonable crime. Except for me, of course.

He was found the murderer of Sir Kyle Jonas, one of the most prominent men in the country, and also one of the close aides of the Emperor.

But he was very weird.

I mean since his day one in here, he has been goody-two-shoes. Smiling at everyone who passes by. Offering help. Making small talks.

Very weird for someone who just committed a capital crime.

Well, if you look in that manner, I am very weird too.

But I am weird because I hadn't committed the crime! So, I deduced that it was the same case for him too.

But Sir Gillems told me that, the soldiers didn't exactly find him. He surrendered.

And because of that, instead of the original punishment of killing a close aide of the King, he is given a simple death.

If it was five years back, I would have laughed at this statement.

Simple death or painful death doesn't matter. You die. That's all that matters.

But the past five years taught me that, given the privilege of dying a normal and painful death is such a boon.

And since he had already surrendered that means that he has already entered redemption.

And the lovely thing is that he even has a family. His wife always comes and meets him. Prisoners in their first week are allowed, visitors. And obviously, none came for me.

And she is pregnant! He is not a youngster. But he is not too old either.

Apparently, he didn't have any child and has been visiting many doctors and using many herbs.

And when his wife finally became pregnant, he is in jail!

"Very sorry." He said. "It's a very important thing to me. I just panicked." He said.

"I understand. Please get back. If the others come, they will not be as patient as me. And if I do find it, I will bring it to you, alright?" I asked.

"Yes, thank you." He said, got up, and left.

Wait, he didn't tell me what his ring looks like! Ah, whatever. If I find a ring, I will just take it to him.

"Miss Elle?" I heard a maid's voice.

"Yes?" I turned.

It was one of the younger maids in here. They don't usually have direct contact with the prisoners, well, I am not a usual case either.

But today, she had a different complexion. A more... worried complexion.

"Everything alright?" I asked.

"Yeah. Just my careless self. I lost something." She said.

Seriously?! What is with people losing things and today? I thought.

"Oh. I hope you get it back." I said.

"Yeah me too." She said.

"And why did you call me?" I asked.

"Ah, that! Today is the day that you are given permission to go out." She said.

And that's another not-so-usual thing you find in this penitentiary.

Once confirmed not that harmful, prisoners are given a chance to go out of the prison and should be back in less than a day. There is also a certain distance limit.

And of course, I, since day one have been under the not so harmful category.

And as far as I am concerned, the distance limit is not as lengthy as the next country. So, I just take Gillems and go watch the starry night, lying with my back on the soft grass.

"And, is it as usual..?" The maid asked.

"Yeah," I said.

Soon the afternoon came.

I got out of my cell. The new guy was happily reading a book.

I looked at his fingers. No ring. I thought of asking, but then I didn't want to bring him out of his happiness.

And that reminded me of that young maid.

I then quickly turned to the maid's quarters.

Everyone in the maid quarters knew me, so some came to me as soon as I reached.

"What brings Ella to our humble quarters?" One of the maids joked.

"Nothing. I just came to check on a maid. I heard that she lost something valuable. So, I just came to check, whether she found it or not." I said.

"Oh, you're talking about Seina. Don't get me started. She is sleeping now and I can see a frown on her face. And I am betting my whole annual salary that her nightmare is about that thing." A maid said.

"Oh. Anyway, I need to go. Sir Gillems is waiting for me." I said and the maid nodded.

"Have a good day." Miss Brints said and I smiled.

I ran to Gillems.

"Little late today?" He asked.

"I had to check on with a maid," I said.

"Oh." I looked at his face. There was a frown there.

"Now, don't tell me that you lost something too," I said.

"No! Why did you think so?" He asked.

"Nothing. What is the matter anyway?" I asked.

"It is about that new guy." He said.

"What about him?" I asked.

"There is something fishy about him."
