I was sitting at home when a heard a scream. No, it wasn't an I'm-about-to-die-and-something-is-seriously-wrong sort of scream. It was more like an I'm-so-excited-I-can't-contain-myself kind of scream. I knew it was my sister Lena. I sighed and walked into our living room, my parents always joked that this one room was larger than both their childhood homes combined, which actually shouldn't been that surprising consider they both used to be at the bottom of the castes.
The castes still unfortunately exist, but the 8 caste is gone, however. And as predicted there was my 16 year-old sister, excitedly jumping up and down. Mom and dad sat on the couch, probably called in by her and our two younger twin brothers, Elec and Shalom, were on the floor, watching cartoons on the TV.
"Why is Lena screaming?" I asked, glancing again at her excited figure. " The letter is hereeee~!" Lena sang.
Oh. The letter. The letter that could change people's lives. "Your signing up with me right?" Lena asked, and I groaned but agreed, "Yes. But know this is only because I promised." You see, in a moment of desperation a few years ago in exchange for her doing my chores for a week I promised when the time came I would enter the dreaded Selection along with her.
"You know, your mother was in the last selection." Our father said. Mom shot him a look, indicating he was not supposed to say that. "It was a long time ago." She added.
I shrugged, mom didn't like talking about the Selection for some reason.
After that Lena dragged me upstairs to look for the perfect outfit for the photos tomorrow at our Province Office in Clermont.
