Urokodaki had never once doubted the youngest of his home. Tanjirou was gifted, in more than one thing. His ability in breathing techniques were superior to most, especially for his current age. At ten, he'd mastered Water breathing with ease. But that hadn't been all. In time, he'd opened up and disclosed the other's he'd viewed before. Both far greater then the peaceful nature of water. The first had been one Urokodaki himself had not known of. Sun Breathing was a mystery, mystifying everyone when they saw it. To make matters more complicated, no one was able to learn it. It was simply a gift that Tanjirou wielded. The ability to harness three techniques. Water breathing, Sun breathing, and lastly, moon breathing. That said, Tanjirou rarely used the other two. He'd simply sought to use Water breathing to keep similar to his 'family'. To never stand out and be above them.
While Tanjirou had taken two years of training, the rest needed nearly three. Even so, Tanjirou continued his practice. Extra training was never a bad thing. He'd work on the other techniques in his free time, devoting endless amounts of energy into his breathing practice. But three years later and it paid off. He was eleven when news from Urokodaki summoned the four into the house.
They had been outside chatting amongst each other, messing about. Giyuu had reached the age of fourteen, same a Sabito. Both had fairly longer hair, though nothing compared to Tanjirou. His hair grew drastically, falling to his lower back, if not further. Makomo often tied it up, an older sister to Tanjirou. She was two years older and such a gentle soul. Tanjirou found her as a favorite by that quality alone, not that he didn't adore his other family. They were all a blessing he cherished more than life itself.
As the four entered the building, they noticed Urokodaki motion them all to sit. As they did, he slid his mask partially away, a soothing smile present. He held a box close, taking in a long breath.
"I have decided this year you'll partake in Final Selection. You'll travel tomorrow at dawn and arrive by evening. I have faith in you all and protect each other. As for you Tanjirou, I've a gift." The youngest tilted his head, seeing the older male push the box his way. "It was finished a year ago, but it's important for tomorrow. The other's have their swords, so this is yours. I even added something special just a month ago to it."
"Thank you Urokodaki." Tanjirou unsealed the box, glancing to the sword as a smile crested his features. It had once been his father's sword, melted down into a darker color of hilt. Red diamond shapes were stitched into the hilt, leading to two separate threads that trailed the end of the pommel. On one end rested a moon, the other a sun. Both colored and standing out from the darker and lighter tones of the katana. He pressed his hand to the hilt, pulling it free as the blade adjusted tones. The dark charcoal color was hued with a slight red tinge along the bladed end. Even in the red hues, there was another color, a light white that speckled the blade. It created such a vast view, something unseen and by far, a beauty to the gaze.
"That looks amazing, Tanjirou!" The smaller nodded, grabbing the holster it would rest in. He sheathed the weapon, placing it beside him as Urokodaki spoke up once more.
"I expect great things from you four. Together, you're unbeatable. All this practice will help you and remember this one thing; Always, protect each other. No one can grant perfection, but having someone you trust watch your back will ease the stress. It will offer you more possibilities. It has been amazing to see you four grow, especially you; Tanjirou. I would never change the past. Not after it brought you to me. You are a part of my family, just as the others." All four chuckled, Giyuu glancing to Tanjirou, who returned the gaze. "Now, enough of that chit chat. While it is early, rest up. You head out fairly early into the morning and the trip will be a length."
"Understood Sensei!" The four spoke in unison before rising from the floor. Tanjirou held his new katana close as he followed Giyuu out. Sabito and Makomo stuck close to the other, trailing toward the front door to simply socialize for a time. Urokodaki watched it all, a warmth somewhere in his chest. He knew fully well, he'd been blessed. He had endless hopes for them. For the future. It was the first time he felt the world was changing for good.
As night had fallen upon the house, most were sleeping for the following day. All besides Tanjirou, who couldn't help but leave the room. The moon was high overhead when he opened the main door, drifting into the outside. He leaned along the outer foundation, taking in the gentle breeze and calming smells that rolled under his nose. He'd never been this anxious. To finally get to explore the outside more. As he let his mind wander, he'd not heard the front door open until feet crunched the dried leaves beside Tanjirou. As he glanced, he noticed the raven, who's blue eyes seemed to reflect the moon.
"What's got you up so late?" Giyuu chuckled, glancing to the sky. His tone was soft, so serene.
"I could ask the same, Tanjirou. What's bothering you?"
"Nothing really, just nervous. I've never been anywhere beyond my old home and here. I don't know anything about the outside world." Giyuu nodded, humming momentarily before he smiled gently.
"Even so, you have us. We won't let you stumble, least not alone. If you get scared, we'll tame that fear. If you get hurt, we'll mend those wounds. You're our family and as such, we will protect you. Urokodaki would not have allowed you to go if you were not ready, Tanjirou. So have faith in yourself." Tanjirou remained silent, simply drinking in those words. After a short while, the smaller male chuckled, leaning against Giyuu. The two had become inseparable, a perfect older and younger brother.
"Thank you, Giyuu. Sorry if I woke you for nothing." A hand ruffled Tanjirou's hair as Giyuu snickered.
"You didn't do a thing. Worries are normal. They are a human aspect. But remember you have us. You're not alone, not anymore. Not ever." Those maroon eyes met Giyuu's as Tanjirou felt tears gleam at the edges.
"Do you promise. That we'll stay together forever?" The older nodded, pulling Tanjirou into a hug. It made the other break, his tears rolling down his face as he hid his face in the attire of the other. Even through the slight sobs, Tanjirou could hear Giyuu's every word. Smell his calming aroma.
"I promise. I won't ever let you go; that is my word."
