A week had passed before Yoriichi risked heading into another town. He had been cautious, especially after helping the young girl prior. There was no telling who she would tell, should she not heed his words. That alone made him stake out beyond the eyes of others, listening closely in case danger lurked around the corner or beyond his own eyes. Once he had deemed it safe, he slipped from his refuge. Wandering the dirt road leading into the unnamed town, he entered silently, not drawing a single gaze. It was a simple feat for him, to remain unseen by those around him. A skill of sorts.
He moved along the length of each road, viewing the serene living within the bright town. Most went about their day, minding their own business. Yoriichi headed down an alley before exiting the road it connected to, stalls coming to life as many gathered to purchase products. He scanned each one, simply looking for something cheap. He had no real wealth, but a few pieces of currencies to get a quick meal. While it wouldn't be filling in the slightest, beggars could not be choosers. He eventually took note to a stall selling simple bread, a single loaf being just under what he had on him. Stepping closer, he approached before speaking. With his lack of conversation, his voice was weak. His throat was beyond dry, but it was something he ignored.
"Excuse me, kind sir. I'd like a single slice of bread." The gentleman who was far in age took a long look at Yoriichi, giving a soft smile as he cut a couple pieces. He placed them on the small basket, holding it out. It caught Yoriichi by surprise.
"It's on the house. You seem to be in need of some nutrients, so please accept this." A long silence followed before he placed the coins he had down, shaking his head. Yoriichi had always been as such. So kind and unwilling to take things for granted.
"I can not simply just take it. You've gathered the supplies to make it to earn profit, so it is a must I pay proper price. A single slice should be enough, I assure." Once more the older gentleman urged Yoriichi, who continued to refuse. Eventually the older male stopped speaking before his own words startled the other a bit.
"If you wish to earn this food, might you aid me for a moment. I've been standing for sometime and would like a short rest. Do this and I assure you've payed for that bread." Yoriichi gave it a long thought, finally accepting. He watched the older guy take a seat along the crate just beside the cart, his hands unfolding the lunch he'd brought. He ate it silently, humming softly. It brought a smile to Yoriichi, who'd been without real company for far too long. It brought back joy somewhere in his heart, just being so close to someone who oozed a pure kindness.
While running the stall, Yoriichi found himself immersed in conversation with the older male. He didn't speak much about himself nor his past, but listened as the older male spoke openly. It had been a blow knowing the guy had suffered. Demons had caused his biggest heartache, yet he wore a genuine smile. He carried on and forged forward, showing more bravery and strength then most. He was admirable.
"What is your name, mister traveler? You may call me Kanguro."
"How did you know I was a traveler?" Kanguro simply smiled, rising from the crate he rested on. He took over before motioning Yoriichi to take his spot on the crate. Listening, he sat as the older gentleman spoke up.
"Simple. This town does not receive travelers, but when we do, we keep to ourselves. We will not pester about the past nor the reasons you travel here. We simply offer aid. This small town is my home, somewhere I love and most know each other well. Which brings me to my next question. You seem fairly exhausted and surely need a comfortable space to sleep. I would like to offer a stay at my home. It's been a long time since I've had company, so it would warm my heart." Yoriichi stayed silent for a moment, taking in everything. He had a huge head start, so a single night would not hurt him. He had a child to care for, which in truth gave him an answer.
