You Know Him

You know Pietro Maximoff. You've had plenty of time to hear about his habits, the way he likes to skive off work until S.H.I.E.L.D. is practically chasing him with a battalion of armed soldiers to force him back to be serious on another Avengers mission. You know about how he flirts with anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path, how he'll grin and smirk his way out of anything he doesn't want to do, which happens to be quite a lot.

You also know that you're supposed to be assigned a partner to work with on missions. Apparently you know too much to be left alone when you go into the field, so you're meant to have someone else watching your back just in case you find yourself in a little too deep. After all, S.H.I.E.L.D. would lose about a quarter of its secrets if you went down, so they have to have a little insurance. All the same, you'd been hoping that your partner would end up being someone good, like another Romanoff. When you hear you'll get Pietro Maximoff, though, you know immediately that this is going to make life very, very hard.

At first, you thought that there must have been a misunderstanding. First of all, Pietro's an Avenger, and Avengers don't get themselves stuck in an assignment with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, no matter how good you are. And, you're fairly good yourself, which means that you wouldn't get stuck in an assignment with an Avenger because your few higher-ups wouldn't want you to have to deal with press coverage whenever you come back from a mission.

All of this means that this can't be right, that the manila file folder tossed casually on your desk informing you that Pietro will be your partner must have accidentally been delivered to your workspace instead of that of the hapless intern who no doubt should have been saddled with the speedster. When you casually asked Fury, though, he just shook his head. "No, Agent, he'll be with you. You two will be able to work well together." If you didn't know better, you'd say he was holding back a laugh as he walked you to the door.

Now there's nothing left to do except gather up your reservations and stow them away. It's time to meet Pietro. He'll be arriving at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in a few minutes to discuss mission strategy- you'll be working together for a long time, probably months, until one of you gets reassigned. You'll have to lay down rules and tips for what will make the best team. That's what happens every time you have a new partner.

You wait expectantly by the doors. Strangely enough, for a man who's inhuman ability is speed, Pietro is late. First it's five minutes, then it's ten. You don't think you can check your watch often enough, but finally he shows up fifteen minutes after the prearranged time. He shows up in a crackling storm of blue energy, suddenly standing before you where seconds earlier there was nothing but empty space.

To your credit, you don't flinch at his sudden arrival, and you swear he looks almost disappointed. You simply nod once, turning crisply to walk towards the halls leading towards your office. "Follow me. We can talk business once we're out of the public eye." Pietro keeps pace with you easily, his breeze strut a clear difference from your military stride. "I can't wait, Agent. Or, can I call you Y/N? That's your name, isn't it?"

You deviate from your calculating stare forward to toss a disdainful glance his way. "Agent L/N is fine." Pietro's grin widens despite this. "Oh, great. I can tell that we're going to get along perfectly." You want to raise an eyebrow, but you don't. You've been taught many times before how to school your face into neutral, to not give away a single emotion. Without this, you have no doubt that you'd be glaring at Pietro with a look that could kill almost as well as your fists or guns.

This ends up being a more truthful prediction than you could have thought- Pietro seems determined to rile you up as much as possible. In all honesty, you suppose you'd been opposed to the partnership even before he showed up, rankled at the idea that you need supervision when you have more than enough experience to work alone, but it's not like Pietro's making it hard to dislike him. At every opportunity, he cracks jokes, slouches, struts, does everything in his power to flirt with you. He's impossible.
