'Hey, no! You can't go up there!' Fenisha yelled up at the man, who was rocking slightly, and squinting as if the room was rather too bright. He was making his way up the stairs at the centre of the ED, that lead up to the rest of the hospital. With a sigh, Fenisha hurried up after him. 'Seriously, what are you doing?'
'I need to see my wife' he slurred back.
'Not in that state you don't. you're drunk, it won't do either you any good.'
'What are you going to do about it sweetheart?' he pushed past her, knocking her off balance, and she found herself tumbling down the two flights of stairs. She landed at the bottom painfully, in an undignified heap.
In amongst the bustle of the ED, nobody noticed the confrontation, until they heard Fenisha cry out as she fell. A couple of the security team chased after the guy as a concerned huddle formed around Fenisha.
'Are you alright?' queried Ethan. She puled herself to her feet, slightly shaken.
'Um, I don't know... I think so. Nothing's broken, but I'll probably have a couple of nasty bruises tomorrow. Oh... wait.' Her voice quickly turned panicked as she realised something was wrong. 'The baby, I can't feel the baby. Fenisha noticed that Ethan's face looked as concerned as she felt. Rash glanced down at his watch.
'I've got to get back to my patient, but I could squeeze you in for a quick check up in about 15 minutes.' Rash offered.
'I'm free right now Fenisha if that's any easier.' Suggested Ethan, hoping that she would agree, so he would get a chance to be there with her and see the ultrasound.
'That would be great, thanks Ethan.'
Fenisha glanced over at Ethan as she set the machine up.
'What happens... if the baby's dead.'
'There's no point worrying, we don't know anything yet. It'll be okay.'
'You don't know that.'
'Look Fenisha, you aren't the only one who's concerned here. This is my baby too!'
'Yeah, sorry, it's just hard not to worry.'
'It's okay, I'm just going to get started.' He asked as he put gel on her stomach and began to push the doppler across her skin. After a couple of moments, he turned pale, and frantically began to check the machine.
'Ethan, what's wrong?'
'It could just be a technical prob-'
'Just tell me what's wrong' she cut in.
'I can't find a heartbeat. Without either of them having to say a word, they found themselves holding hands, fingers intertwined. Then, they just needed something to hold onto, and right then it felt like they might never let go.
