• Note: This story takes place in a timeline where the Pogues haven't gone after any serious treasure yet. Though it'll be mixed with some storylines that have already occurred in the show, the rest is filled with new scenarios. I also started writing this in 2021 before we met Cleo's character, but the next book will feature her! Thank you and enjoy~

What makes someone call a place home?
People. Well, that's what the logical answer seems to be, right?Familiar places no longer matter when you're surrounded by familiar faces. No amount of miles driven will ever make you distant when the people you love are traveling with you.
You have your favorite restaurant a couple blocks down that you might miss once leaving. A couple people from school you wished you could've been friends with—But that's all. It was never home, those people were never your actual friends.
But to me—To me those places were my home. Not the house I shared with my family or just my family in general, really—Actually, literally any place where they weren't there felt more like home to me. I don't even know who's worse or where to start, but I guess we'll go in order from youngest to oldest.
I'm Kal. The one who's afraid of the deep ocean and has a hard time controlling my hair in any weather. The heat doesn't like curls I guess, either that or I'm too lazy to deal with them. I find a place to work wherever we move, which usually means waitressing or being behind a cash register. My headphones are on during good and bad days, and my skate board remains under my feet no matter the weather.
Then we have my older brother, Kyle. No yeah, I think I hate him the most, he's gotta be the worst. He's almost nineteen and acts like his age gives him some sort of authority in every situation.
In his eyes I'm only a burden—I would say that's unfair if I hadn't felt the same way towards him. The only difference is that he does shit when he's angry. He needs to let it out somehow, and he thinks the only solution must be me. Bad. Very bad, I know.
Kyle makes sense when you see my father. My brother's like a carbon copy of him, it's kind of terrifying. He coincidentally gets angry only at women and trusts his son more than anything in the world. Think a king and a crown prince—As if Kyle was his heir of a timeless throne—That's the scale we're on. Another very bad thing.
I'd love to say that my mom was my savior in this shitty family—That her and I have this strong connection being the only women in the house. That she takes me out to see a movie on the weekends whenever she doesn't have work.
Instead we've settled on some basic communication about what to eat or which shoes she should wear when going out. She's not defensive or helpful in any way when it comes to Kyle and I, but being content with her is the best thing I have.
That's my family. Yes, we're all related, but I don't consider them to be quite exactly anything close to family. It's understandable and I don't need to dig any deeper in my family's history for you to get the big picture.
North Carolina, home of the...well, I don't know what exactly is in North Carolina or what it's known for, but that's where we're going. The Outer Banks. It's the first move we've made this year. Let's hope it's the last. Or let's hope my family doesn't get into some shit we need to move from. Or that no one they've had bad encounters with finds us.
"What day is it?" Kyle asked as he picked up one of the boxes from the trunk.
"Thursday." I answered, getting out from the back.
"Yeah no shit," He pushed the box into my arms, "I mean like what actual day of the month is it." He continued towards the front door.
"The sixteenth." Of June, right after the last day of junior year.
I followed behind him, "Great." he mumbled, leaving the door open as he stepped inside.
He let out a long whistle, "Look at her, new flooring and everything."
"Yes, just like every other house on this block." I craned my head up to look at the high ceilings.
"Complaining?" he asked. He turned around, blocking my way.
"Need to know the date because you have another deadline?" I dropped the box at his feet.
"Careful, I have valuables in there." He shoved it to the side with his foot, "You make it sound like I owe people money. I sell. You of all people should remember that."
"Oh trust me, I remember."
He shot a petty smile at me before turning on his heel and heading further into the house. "Help the movers get the rest of those boxes." he said as he entered the kitchen.
I pressed my lips together to hold in any insults as I looked over at the box that now sat near the wall.
"Valuables," I mumbled sarcastically, "New word for drugs?" I said under my breath as I turned back towards the front door, passing by two of the moving guys.
They may not be family to me, and this house sure as hell doesn't feel like home, but we do have a business that glues us together.
