Do I Belong Here?

Chapter 1

I was ten years old when my dad left us. And he never said goodbye to me, or my twelve year-old sister, Hannah. We never knew why he left; just one day my dad said he would no longer be here. I was sad for a while, but I have gotten used to just the three of us: me, my mom, and Hannah. Hannah and I go out to California to visit him for most of the summer. He lives on the beach of San Diego in a two-bedroom sun filled apartment. It was a nice getaway from the dark noisy city of Boston.

After that, my mom had to start working at Pepsi and we had been able to keep up with the rent for five years now. Every now and then my mom locks herself in her room and cries, asking God why he got her into this in the first place. But again there is a reason behind everything, which is sometimes hard to understand.

But today, I should be happy. It was our first day of winter break and we were out of school into January 5th. But of course, we were staying local because mom had to get in as many hours as she could.

“Alexis, Hannah!” my mom screamed from the T.V. room.

Our house was pretty basic, two bedrooms, one bathroom, laundry room, kitchen, T.V. room, and a dining room. I had spent my childhood in here so it felt quite comfortable to me.

“Girls I need to talk to you about something serious,” my mom said in a monotone voice. I started to worry, this could be anything. “As you know, your grandfather has been sick lately.” She paused and then continued again.  “He has Alzheimer's and your grandmother has too much to worry about already. So, I have decided to help Grandma, so we will be moving to Texas.” She sighed when she finished.

Hannah and I were speechless. I finally spoke up…”when will we be moving?” I squeaked out.

“In three weeks so a week after you go back to school” she continued.

“But what about all of our friends here in Boston?” Hannah said.

“I know this is difficult for all of us but you girls will have to make new ones there.”

“But what about your job?” Hannah replied quickly.

“ I will be working at the Pepsi plant right by grandma and grandpa’s house.” Mom said. She seemed like she planned out what she was saying.

“But I am going to miss Lauren!” I screamed louder than I expected to.

“You will have to make new ones there and I think Grandma and grandpa have some very nice girls next-door who are about your ages.” Mom said calmly.

Hannah, after spacing out for a lilt bit stormed out of the room into the bedroom we shared…. “THIS ISN’T FAIR!” You would think she would be too old to storm off screaming but I guess not.

“We will be a great help to your grandmother,” My mom said calmly.

“Uhh….Mom?” I said “ what about our house?”

“ I talked to the landlord and a new happy family will be moving in starting on February 1st” My mom continued “ And your new school gets out from break on January 15th so you will start the New Year in a new place.” My mom came over kissed me on the forehead and then walked into the kitchen to close up for the night. I put my head to my knees and cried.

After I recovered from my crying marathon, I retreated to my room getting ready for bed and hoping to get a good sleep.
