Chapter 3

“My mom just told Hannah and me that since my grandpa is sick, we have to move to Texas.” I said taking a sigh of relief. On the other line I heard nothing. “Uh…Lauren…You there?” I asked

“Yeah I’m here. Ohmygosh you aren’t joking are you?” Lauren asked in shock.

“Lauren, we are best friends. Why would I lie about something like this?” I replied.

“I am going to miss you so much. I wish I could come with you.” I smiled a little bit. “Wait when are you leaving?” she questioned.

“A week after we go back to school and my school there starts on the 15th,” I said.

“Okay we need to spend so much time together over break. Wanna go to the mall tomorrow and then I could help you pack. Oh I wish I could give you a hug.” Finally Lauren finished. I had to smile. It was typical Lauren to find the better side of every situation and ramble.

“I will need to ask my mom if she can drop us off on the way to work” I said glad to change the topic.

“Cool beans,” Lauren said. “So what stores should we go to? ‘Cause we need to get toy some cute clothes for Texas.” Lauren said.

“Haha okay. Um… How about American Eagle and Gap?” I said.

“Sounds good. So I will come over tomorrow at noon?”

“Alright… See ya then!” I said happily.

“Alexis?”

“Yea?”

“I’m really sorry that your grandpa isn’t feeling good. I hope that since you, Hannah, and your mom will be there, he will be just fine.”

“Thanks Lauren. I hope he is too.” I said.

“So I will text you later!”

“Kay! And thanks for understanding what I’m going through.”

“Isn’t that what I’m here for?” Lauren laughed when she finished. “Okay see ya tomorrow.”

“Bye,” I said.  I pressed the end button and smiled to myself. I had a great friend and I wish I didn’t have to leave her in a few weeks.

~~~~~~
I walked into the kitchen smiling a little bit. Mom looked over at me.
“Alexis is everything okay?” she asked.
“Yeah. I just talked to Lauren on the phone. We are gonna go to the mall tomorrow.”
“Do you need me to drive you?”
“Yes please,” I said innocently.
My mom smiled. “Okay. I will on the way to work.”
I grabbed an apple and sat down at the kitchen island. I was busy thinking about everything that happened in the last twenty-four hours. My mom spoke up breaking the silence of my thoughts.  “Oh. Grandma called earlier while you were on the phone with Lauren,” my mom said. “I told her you would call her back.”
“Oh—Kay.” I said sighing while I walked over to get the phone. I dialed their number and pressed the phone to my ear. On the other end I heard my grandma’s sweet voice.
“Hi honey!” She said.
“Hi Grandma!” I said excitedly. I hadn’t talked to her in with seemed like forever.
“So your mom told you the news?”
“Yes, last night and I called Lauren to tell her. And I’m really sorry about Grandpa’s health.
“Oh Honey, he hasn’t been well for a while but I know he will be happy to see his beautiful granddaughters.” I felt a tear coming down my cheek thinking of the active grandpa I remember only a few years ago. I couldn’t picture him in bed and a lot weaker than he was. Grandma and I talked about my new room and how she told Kaylee and Scarlett, our new neighbors who also watched out for them and apparently Kaylee was smiling.
I pictured us jumping into the pool over the summer not knowing she would become my new neighbor. Things had really changed since the summer and I didn’t know if I was okay with it.
“Nice talking to you grandma! I will call again when we start packing and there are many boxes on the ground.”
“Okay sweetie”
“Would you like to talk to Hannah?”
“No, I talked to her earlier. Take care.”
“Okay. Love you! Bye!” I said.
“Love you!” I pressed the end button, smiled and went to my room thinking about how close I would be with Grandma in just a few weeks.
