Lavinia woke up to the sound of birds chirping on the cherry tree near the balcony. She got up from the bed and moved towards it. She leaned upon the marble railings and looked out to the meadows around the mansion. She played with the sparrows who came to her as soon as she approached the railing. They fluttered around her and chirped delightfully. A few even perched on her hands. After playing with them for a while, she looked down to the gardens. The gardens were a feast for the eyes in the morning. ‘They looked magical in the night, but in the morning it’s enchanting.’ Lavinia thought to herself. Taking in the fresh air around her she went back inside. After a nice long bath she glanced at the clock hanging on the wall where the mirror stood. It was six thirty AM. She wore her uniform and checked herself before the mirror. She had beautiful turquoise-jade hair, just like her mother. Her eyes were a deep turquoise blue which were simply enchanting. Her face, as many people said looked as if it was sculpted from marble. She arranged her hair in two pony tails, which curled at the bottom. She walked out of the room and crossed the lobby to climb down the grand staircase. The doors on the right led to the dining hall. Her father was sitting at the head of the table, reading his newspaper, leaving his cup of tea untouched. Hearing footsteps he looked up from his paper and smiled as he saw her. “Good morning dear. I trust that you slept well last night.”, He said kindly. “I did sleep well father, thank you.” Lavinia replied cheerfully. She took her place by his side and reached out for the bread platter. Taking two bagels she took a table knife and applied cream cheese over it. It was her favourite breakfast meal. After finishing her meal, her maid Maria served her tea. “ Your tea mistress, warm and sweet as you like it.” Maria said in a cheerful manner. “Thank you Maria! It would be delightful as always…” Finishing her tea she turned to Maria and said, “I was thinking about buying some new things for my room. I have heard that the market here has a lot of choices to offer. Accompany me to the town market in the afternoon could you? I also need to find books to fill up the library, and it would be helpful of you to come.” Maria replied cheerfully, “ I don’t think that would be a problem mistress. I would have finished my preparations for lunch by then. I would be glad to accompany you.” Lavinia smiled. “It’s settled then!” As she was about to get up her father said to her, “It’s a new country out here. You must be missing Pergrande don’t you? It will take time Lavinia to feel at home here. Try to enjoy your days here. And have a good day at school.” Lavinia smiled and said “don’t worry father, I’ve started liking this country already. As for friends I already made a few!” Giving a wink she turned and left for the outside. A carriage was waiting for her outside. Lavinia checked her watch. It was seven five. One more hour for school to start. She went in the carriage and with a neigh of the horses it started. She pulled open the windows. Taking in the fresh air around her, she looked around the scenery of the countryside. Soon enough the town came in view. Narrow lanes of bustling bazaars, accolades, paved footpaths, cobbled roads; brightly painted buildings were a feast for Lavinia’s eyes. ‘So this is how Magnolia is…so full of life and energy…a city of happiness and felicity…’, she mused.
The school soon came into view. The carriage came to halt before tall, iron wrought gates. Carved into them, were two words, “St. Rolstair’s Academy”. The valet jumped from the horse, and let the door open. Lavinia walked outside. The gates screeched open. As she entered a cold breeze came by and she turned hearing a click of heels. Dressed in a black tail coat suit, a silver haired youth bowed to her. ‘My lady,’ he began in slight drawl, ‘ her noble imperial highness asked of me to escort you to the high office and assist you in your new beginning with this institution.’ Saying this he snapped his fingers. A briefcase appeared out of nowhere. ‘That would seem reasonable enough Arthur. Or rather perhaps the title, noble Prince Vassago, Leader of 26 legions of Hell, would seem more perfect, wouldn’t it?’ Lavinia replied. Vassago replied again in a drawl, with a trace of pleasant surprise, “Your intelligence never ceases to amuse me my ladyship. Do tell me how did you chance upon that?” She replied quickly, “The direction of the wind. Your element commandment is of the wind. But since you are the prince of east hence the channelling of demonic presence through the wind element shall take place through eastern direction.” She continued further but Vassago’s long drawl again cut her off, “and me being a demon truly attests to the fact that her imperial highness only deals with Demons in the form of servants. The seal of Solomon provides for such.” “Your old habits do die hard.” Lavinia played with her hair as she spoke, “Do pray tell me what happened to Dantalion. It’s unusual that he left the contract this early….Wait did he leave from the contract? ” “Not much to say here actually.” Vassago answered in a monotone. “His excellency the Duke Dantalion has broken off the contract by himself. Stating his inability to serve her loyally, he stated to your noble aunt that there was a matter of great urgency which required him in his domains in the underworld. Not much of an emergency I suppose.” Lavinia could feel there was more to Vassago’s story as he ended the conversation. She replied with ease, “I see. Let’s carry on with your assignment in the school now. Time is not always on our side.”
