-September 14th, 1993-

It'd been a few hours since school finished, Deena was sat on her bed with her legs crossed listening to music. Her mind drifted to the kiss. She couldn't help but smile. However she was worried about Sam. Deena didn't know whether to go round to Sam's place and potentially get battered by her mom or give her some time and space. The thoughts whirled around in her mind for a while as she zoned out from the rest of the world.

She was snapped out of it abruptly as Josh shouted up to her room "DEENA!" Josh was at the bottom of the stairs. He'd obviously called her names a few time prior to Deena noticing as he yelled impatiently, missing some of his game.
Deena came running down the stairs. "What?"
"It's Sam." Josh pointed to the shut door.
"Sam?" Deena asked, a bit surprised.
"Yep." Josh started to make his way back to his room but left Deena with - "Your girlfriend" He managed through an exaggerated cough.
Deena whirled around and flew her arms up in the air. "Shut the fuck up Josh!" With genuine annoyance. Worried that Sam would've heard.
She sort of liked Josh saying it though. She liked the way it sounded.

Deena brushed her hands through her hair, took a deep breath and opened the door.
Sam stood there looking as if something inside of her had changed. She was wearing baggy jeans and a tank top, her hair was up in a messy style. Deena thought she looked gorgeous, and it actually took her breath away a little bit.
Before Deena could say anything, Sam stepped a little closer.
"You wanna get burgers?" She asked, hope and excitement in her voice.
Deena tilted her head with a smirk.
"Our favourite food." Deena stated.
They'd previously had a conversation about this. Her smile grew.
"Let me get my keys."

The drive to Burger King was still and soothing, something they both needed. They hadn't said much to each other. This time though, the silence wasn't awkward. Sam was looking out the window, watching the trees and traffic zoom by. Every minute or so they'd look at each other and smile or a let out a giggle.

They arrived at Burger King and placed their orders at the drive through.
"Ok so Deena, I am paying for this." Sam announced.
Deena raised an eyebrow.
"Nope I'm paying."
Sam glared at her with the smile that made Deena melt.
"Sam don't look at me like that." Deena gushed.
"You just wait." Sam insisted.
They came to the window where they had to pay.
"Hello!" They both called out at the man who was asking for payment. Both of them were waving their coins and notes about frantically.
"Here take mine." Sam leaned over, put one of her hands on Deena's upper thigh to balance herself and her chest pushed up onto Deena's.
Deena took that gulp again and both her hands fell down.
The man took Sam's money.
He glanced at them and his eyes squinted with a knowing look. "Thank you, girls." He thanked. They began to move to the next window.
Sam sat back in her chair with the biggest smirk, looking smug.
"Wow. That was quite obviously cheating." Deena snickered, a bit breathless.
"How so?" Sam still had the smirk on her face.
"Don't hate the player, hate the game." She finished with a giggle.
"You're good." Deena held her hands up.
"Hands on the wheel!" Sam laughed jokingly.
Deena smiled at how much Sam seemed to be enjoying herself. It was such a tough situation for them both to be in, regardless of the other troubles in their lives. It was turning out to feel like heaven.

When they'd collected their burgers, Deena turned to Sam.
"Have you got the evening free?" Deena asked.
"I'm not meant to, but, yes." Sam really wanted to stay. She wanted to stay forever.
"You rebel." Deena joked.
"I'm getting a lot more like you recently." Sam confessed. It sounded as though she meant it in a good way.
Deena just smiled at her. "Shall we go to the beach?" She proposed.
"The beach?" Sam almost squawked.
"The beach." Deena laughed.
"Deena the beach is like 3 hours away." Sam protested.
"Give or take." Deena replied softly.
Sam took a look at Deena's puppy eyes. They only came out occasionally.
After a few seconds the corner of Sam's mouth lifted.
"Let's go to the beach." Sam nodded gently in agreement.
Deena clapped enthusiastically.
"You doofus." Sam cackled.
Deena's mouth opened in pretend anger. "Oh I'm the doofus? You better watch out Samantha." Deena grinned, knowing that would provoke Sam.
"Samantha?!" She let out a deep laugh from her belly.
And with that, they were off.
