"Do you think this looks alright?" Deena was sat in her backyard with Josh, surrounded by various art and craft items.
"It's perfect." Josh replied as he twisted the lid back on some glitter.
"However this isn't very...you." Josh didn't know how to say it.
Deena was making a valentines card for Sam and Josh was attempting to help.
"What do you mean?" Deena asked defensively.
"Well, it's a bit lovey-dovey." Josh shot back. Deena looked at the floor and finished the card.
"She must make you feel things." Josh smiled.
"She does." Deena replied. "I feel happy, Josh." She leant back on her elbows.
"I know." Josh was glad for her. He chucked some glitter on Deena.
"JOSH. C'mon man I thought we were bonding."
The phone started to ring so Deena ran in to get it. It was Sam, her face lit up.
"Hi Deena." Sam said quietly.
"Hey, everything ok?" Deena asked, sounding a bit worried.
"Sort of. No ones in. Can you come to mine?" Sam asked.
Deena put her hand to her forehead and rubbed her temple.
"Yeah, yeah of course. I'll be there in an hour? I'm just finishing something." She replied.
"Anything I can help with?" Sam asked.
"No, silly." Deena giggled softly. "I'll see you soon."
"Ok - I love you." Sam said, her voice wavering.
"I love you too. See you in a second." Deena put the phone down and packed up the card.
Shortly after she drove to Sam's. Sam seemed really happy to see her. As if something was ending, and she didn't want it to. Deena asked what was up but she kept brushing her off.
Sam let her in to an empty house that smelt like incense. They went up to Sam's room and Deena opened the door to Sam's bed with flower petals scattered over it and candles burning. Slow songs were playing in the background.
Deena put her hands up to her face and proceeded to give Sam a gentle kiss when she saw what Sam had done.
"I didn't forget." Sam held out her hand and rubbed Deena's forearm.
"Neither did I." Deena hummed while pulling the card she made out of her jacket pocket.
Sam bit her lip and retrieved the card she made for Deena out of her pocket too.
"Snap." She laughed.
"God we're cringe." Deena pulled her hand through her hair. They both grinned.
For a while they sat on Sam's bed and read the words they wrote for each other in silence. They were both sniffling by the end.
"Don't cry, you're making me cry." Sam pulled Deena towards her and pressed her into her chest.
For the rest of the day they just held each other beneath the sheets and let the music play.
The sex they had varied during their relationship, but this sex was entirely soft and intimate.
Laying naked under the covers, Sam turned to Deena and glided her thumb up and down her cheek. Deena knew she was going to say something.
"I'm moving to Sunnyvale." A tear fell onto her nose and ran down it.
For a few seconds, Deena stayed completely still and stared at Sam, trying to take it in. When she did let it sink in, she threw the covers off of her and sat up. Sam sat up too and watched her lover unravel.
"You're what?" Deena finally responded.
"My parents are splitting up. I have to move and live with my mom." Sam was now in tears.
Deena had jumped out of bed and started putting her clothes on. Sunnyvale was probably about a 40 minute drive away from Shadyside, but it was an unspoken fact that it was obviously another planet.
"Christ." Deena tilted her head up towards the ceiling and tried to keep her tears in. She hated to see Sam so upset but her own emotions had already taken over. Whenever Deena felt hurt she struggled to show it, and instead of regulating her emotions she'd become aggressively defensive and act like a brick wall.
Sam managed to calm her down and they took a walk to a nearby park. On the way, Sam told her she'd be moving in a few days. It was a rushed and intense decision. They sat down on the swings and kept their heads down.
"This doesn't have to be the end." Sam pressed.
"Trust me, I don't want it to be." Deena was so close to acting as if she didn't even want Sam anymore. Even though it couldn't be more from the opposite.
Sam tried to touch Deena on her arm but she moved away.
"But it can't work. You know it can't." Deena said quietly.
After hearing this, Sam burst into tears. Deena couldn't do it anymore, she walked up to Sam and wrapped her arms around her, kissing on top of her head.
"I can learn how to drive!" Sam pleaded.
"Sam it's not that." Deena wiped a tear from her face.
"I know." Sam admitted and took a big breath. She was admitting defeat after a while.
"I hate this. We've been through so much. I love you - I love you so much." Deena was crying now too.
"I wanted this to be forever." Sam held onto Deena. She didn't want to let go.
"I wanted it. I want it so bad." Deena replied. It was silent for a while.
"We have to break up." Deena finally said. Sam didn't reply. Only nodded and let the tears fall. It started to rain.
"Can I just walk you home?" Sam asked Deena.
"No Sam, let's just leave it here." Deena insisted. She was hurting so much.
"I can't take the pain." She admitted.
They stood up at the same time and pulled each other into the most heartbreaking hug. It lasted for about 5 minutes.
Deena eventually pulled away and kissed Sam on the cheek, turned around quickly and walked back home, leaving Sam standing in the rain.
They both wept on the way home, when they got back, and for days after. Memories of each other everywhere around them. Could this be fixed?
