Others

Classes were over as soon as I reached. Everyone in the school, including the staff were sent home and told there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Yeah, right. I walked back home, feeling melancholy with a myriad of questions burning in my head. "Did the diary kill him?"
"What should I do with the diary?" "Am I a killer?" I heaved a deep sigh, knowing I'd probably get no answers.

At home, I almost forgot to eat dinner. My mother asked me why I came home early today. I barely even heard her. I just glumly nodded and went up to my room without even finishing half of my food.

In my room, I opened my diary and...WHAT?! It had writing in it. I hadn't written anything. Mom never comes to this room and besides, my diary was very well hidden. Who wrote this???

I calmed my breathing and tried to stop panting before reading the writing.

'Rules:
1. No forfeiting. The punishment for forfeiting is death.
2. With the help of your Chronicle, you must eliminate OTHERS with the same type of chronicles.
3. You cannot kill other Chronicle owners using solely your diary.
4. Destroying another's diary is not allowed.
5. Temporary alliances are allowed but long-term ones are prohibited.
6. Kill or be killed. To lose is to die.
Good Luck, Chronicle Owners!'

What is this? Had this diary really killed a human? Someone of the same species as I? What if I was caught?! No, there's no chance of being caught. I wasn't even at the crime scene when it happened. There is no evidence!

I relaxed a bit. However, I was everything but relaxed when I heard breathing sounds coming from under my bed!!! I could also clearly see a gun.

I wrote in the diary:
'The person under my bed is unarmed.'

And, to my surprise, the gun that was visible just a second ago, just disappeared. As if it was never there in the first place. I'm pretty sure the person under there was a girl and a 'chronicle owner'.

I heard her voice say, "Please do not harm me. I only came here for your help." I pondered this for a moment. "If so, then why exactly did you have A GUN?!" She sighed and came out from under the bed.

Her voice was almost a squeak, "My name is Aldia. I was afraid you would kill me. I wanted your help with the challenge. We must eliminate everyone else. I found a loophole in the rules. Temporary alliances are allowed. The challenge is supposed to last for a maximum of 3 years. Looking at that, even a short-term alliance would be at least 6 months. If we are able to eliminate everyone else in that much time..."

"That's actually not a bad idea." I thought in my head. Finally, I told her yes, but only till the challenge is over.

                                         --Time Skip--

In order for us to protect each other, we had to stick together. A week after I met her, she enrolled in my school, and, believe it or not, we surprisingly became pretty good friends.

During our break at school, (it lasts for an hour), we saw a suspicious-looking man walking around with a diary in his hand.

I took my own diary out, in order to get his attention. I led him outside of school with Aldia sneakily following. I led him to an alley on the corner of the street. From behind him, Aldia quietly came and put a knife to his throat. "How many chronicle owners are alive? How many have you killed? Tell us everything you know or you die."

According to him, 31 owners are alive and he had already killed 2. We decided we had to tie him up and hide him somewhere.

Soon enough, we took him to that old abandoned house where I had found my diary. W tied him up and put duct tape on his mouth. We made sure to take away his diary and pen and hide them. Since there was no rule about not being able to use other's diaries, we chose to use his diary for ourselves.

We left him there and quickly ran back to school for classes.

After school, we decided to part ways for a few hours. In that much time, I decided that I had to be prepared in case someone showed while Aldia wasn't there. I made a special and non-attention-grabbing case for my diary, took a bag, and kept 3 guns that Aldia had given me, and just in case, I ripped out a few pages from the diary and checked if they could work that way.  Pleasingly, they could. Since they could, I ripped out 5 pages and hid them in my shoes, socks, and clothes.

I met Aldia at around 5:25 PM in the evening and showed her all my preparation. Apparently, even she didn't know the pages could be used even after being ripped out.

I went home for dinner, feeling a sense of accomplishment. After dinner, I decided to order a few cameras to install in my room, just in case.

(Next Morning)
Aldia showed up at my house, and we walked to school together, for once not discussing the challenge. School was normal today, without any strange people showing up with chronicles.

The next day went normal, but 2 days later, the guy we had captured, (apparently his name is Issey), told us that one of the chronicle owners he had failed to kill was out for blood. He said that his name was Hiroshi and was extremely smart with his chronicle. The day after that, Issey started acting like he was deranged. He kept biting himself and asking us to kill him over and over. Since he had gone absolutely inane, we put an end to his misery...and killed him.

On Saturday, since it was a holiday, my mother told me we were going for a road trip, just for a day. I told Aldia, and, since we weren't going to do anything major anyway, she said it's okay.

We left at 2:50 PM for the road trip, and I have to say that I was fairly excited. We loaded everything into the trunk of the car and headed off.

After about an hour, I had the same feeling I had before the day Oni had died. The feeling that something bad was about to happen. I turned around and saw three black and shady-looking cars following us. If I wrote in the chronicle for the cars to crash, that wouldn't exactly be killing them, right? Fatal, yes, but not life-taking. I went ahead and wrote:

'The black cars following us will crash after another mile.'

And, sure enough, they crashed in a few minutes, exactly when we completed another mile. My mother saw this and called an ambulance to take them away, but she didn't know the cause of the crash.

My eyes widened because inside the wrecked car...I saw a chronicle!

P.S. For those who didn't know, a chronicle is a record or a diary of sorts.
