"Be good... for me."
Aubrey's words had played on repeat in Hayden's head all day long. Over and over again.
With the almost impossible task of keeping his sister out of trouble and, by doing so, setting an excellent example in the process, Hayden could finally sigh in relief now that the day was successfully over—"You little shit!" A harsh voice violently sliced through the air suddenly.
Well, at least the school day was successfully over.
Hayden and his sister were just about to enter their car when the distant commotion caught Hayden's wandering attention.
He turned and spotted only a glimpse.
But it would be in that glimpse that he saw enough to catch his attention.
A few teens were getting aggressive with a fellow student. They pinned her to the chain-link by two brutes and yelled viciously in her face.
Hayden tilted his head and shoved his hands in his pockets as he watched. Six against one—that didn't seem very fair.
The girl's uniform was pulled and disheveled. Her long raven waves were a tangled mess that covered her face from view. Two girls snatched her bag and rummaged through the inside.
To Hayden and anyone else that looked, it didn't seem like she was putting up much of a fight.
"What are you looking at?" Poppy asked when she noticed something had caught her brother's attention. Poppy came over by his side and followed his gaze. She was always nosy like this.
Hayden ignored his sister as he slipped his hands into his pockets and continued to watch. Eventually, she would realize what he was staring at. You can look, the voice in his head reminded, but you can't get involved. You promised.
And why should he anyway? Their business had nothing to do with him.
It wasn't like Hayden was the only one around, anyways—other students were passing and going. Three girls passed the group who had clearly noticed what was going on.
Surely they might do something.
Hayden took another look, and this time he spotted the sly smirk that curled on one of the girl's lips.
"Nothing," Hayden finally replied. He turned and began walking back to the car. "Let's go!" He called out when his sister didn't immediately follow. Poppy shrugged and walked over.
Hayden held the door open for his sister, like the gentlemen he was.
Poppy smiled and slid inside.
