"Watch it!" Came at her from a taxi driver's mouth as Cassie jumped back from the street. Months in quiet Cairnholm had made her unused to the bustle of her home city.
Still, there was something comforting about the ever moving streets of New York. The cars zooming by, people rushing to their destination without a care for those around them, lights flashing around her. She smiled as she took in her city when she stepped out of the subway.
Cassie was back, standing a few minutes walk away from the apartment in Brooklyn she shared with Lacy, her best friend. She wasn't looking forward to the conversation about her move but she was looking forward to coming home to Alma in two weeks.
She walked to her apartment, texting her other friends for a meet up at their favorite restaurant when she heard a shout, "Cassie! You're back!" It was Lacy, standing outside their building waiting for her.
Cassie laughed and ran over with her suitcase, catching her when she threw herself at her in a tight hug. "I am! How were things here while I was gone?" She asked as they walked up the dingy stairs.
"Exactly the same. I didn't miss you at all." Lacy sniffed before breaking out into a grin. "Kiddingg I totally missed you." She finished as she slammed her shoulder into the door, jiggling the bum lock to make it pop open. "One thing is the same though, our stupid door that the landlord refuses to fix." She said with an eye roll.
Cassie unpacked her bags while Lacy ordered pizza in the living room and she looked around at her room and all the knickknacks decorating it, knowing that soon they would all be gone. Even the stop sign on her wall that her and the girls had stolen one drunken night.
When they were seated and on their second slices, caught up on life here, she decided to start filling her in on what happened there.
"So.. you want to hear about my trip?" Cassie asked. "Course I do, I'm soo interested in just how many birds shit on your head there." Lacy replied sarcastically, though they both knew she'd listen to anything she had to say.
"Well actually something a lot more interesting happened there." Cassie said, smirking.
"No way, on that rock in the ocean?" Lacy replied."Yup." She popped the P. "You know how I have my talent? Well I found more people there that do too, people like me."
At that Lacy's jaw dropped and she put down her slice and sat forward. "Hold-on, seriously? Ok tell me everything."
And so Cassie did, giving her a play-by-play of finding the house and getting to know all the children, and, their headmistress.
"Ooo, this Alma sounds exactly your type." Lacy said, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.
Cassie blushed slightly, "Yeah, she really is. That's what I was getting to we- we kissed. And now we're dating I guess." She finished with a shrug and a lovesick smile.
Lacy squealed and tackle hugged her, happy for her best friend who's love life had previously been something straight out of a Dr. Phil episode. "So how's that gonna work, with you so far away and phones not being a thing for her?" Lacy asked.
"Right, I have to tell you something." Cassie said worriedly. "I'm moving. To Cairnholm, to be with her and the kids." She looked up at her hoping she wouldn't freak out.
"What, oh my god Cassidy Evans. You're leaving me." Lacy whined playfully. "But for real, I'm happy for you and I support you, even though I'm gonna miss you like hell."
Cassie let out a relieved breath and hugged her again, thankful that she has such a wonderful friend in her life.
They spent the rest of the day drinking and gossiping about their other friends and Cassie's new girlfriend until they passed out on the balcony, warm air around them like a blanket.
