Nathan
“I'm home!” I yelled to my wife who was in our bathroom.
I heard some shuffling from the room before she came out, a crooked smile on her face. “Hi, welcome home.”
As per usual, she hugged me and planted a kiss on my cheek as a welcome. She proceeded to help me out of my jacket and shirt as she normally would but today something was off with her.
“Are you okay now?” I asked, remembering how sick she's been feeling.
“I-I'm fine.” She replied shakily. “How was your day?”
Stressful. I thought, sitting on the bed to take me shoes off. “Alright.”
She certainly didn't believe me and I didn't blame her. The trial was two weeks ago and since then, all the property belonging to Alyssa has been returned which included her father's company.
I knew if she were to take it over, she would be too busy to do what she actually wanted to and I didn't want her to give up on her dream. Unlike her, I wanted to manage companies and was happy to manage her father's. It took a lot of convincing but I got her to agree to it.
“Are you sure? You seem stressed.” She sat at the foot of the bed, guiding my head to her lap.
I sighed when I felt her fingers run through my hair and massage my scalp. “Don't get too comfortable, I'm going to start dinner soon.”
“Maybe we should get some maids to help you around the house?” I voiced.
As I expected, she said. “No, we don't need maids.”
“Yes we do.” I argued, forcing myself off her to show I was serious. “Love, Mrs Peters retired last week and I'm pretty sure you won't be able to handle everything.”
“I can. We aren't many in this house, just three, I'm sure I can handle cooking for three people.”
“I'm not talking about just cooking. What about laundry, cleaning? I'm sure the house it too big for you to clean, even Mrs Peters couldn't do it on her own.”
“The house doesn't get too dirty, and I've been doing well since she retired, I'll be fine.”
“What about when we have more kids?” She visibly stiffened when I posed the question.
Her reaction got me thinking, does she not want children with me?
“I have to get started with dinner.” She mumbling before rushing out of the room.
I was left deflated and with a bruised ego. She really doesn't want children with me. I dejectedly trudged into the bathroom to shower and maybe shave my beard that was gradually coming out.
I opened my drawer to get my razor but something caught my eye. It was a small stick with two lines marked on the screen. I knew it was a pregnancy test and that it was Alyssa's but I didn't know the result and I didn't find the pack it came in.
Is she pregnant?
Was she even going to tell me if she is?
Why didn't she tell me that she was taking a pregnancy test?
Instead of confronting her like I normally would and start an argument, I decided to wait a while. She definitely didn't put it in my drawer purposely so maybe she hasn't seen it yet.
Or maybe she doesn't want to tell me.
That was a ridiculous thought. Why would she not want to tell me? She and I swore of keeping secrets from one another so there has to be a reason I didn't know about it before she took it. I don't even know of it's positive or not.
