Maria's Visit

Alyssa

Two weeks after I had Alhan, Nathan and I decided to release to the press that I had given birth. I didn't really care much for it and we did it through an Instagram post.

Most of our family and friends knew about it already as we told them immediately but for some reason Nathan neglected telling his father. I mean, I know they aren't exactly close but he still had the right to know. I didn't ask him why though, it wasn't my biggest concern.

About two days later, I got a surprise visitor. It was none other than Maria herself.

One of our maids came to inform me that she was in the living room while I was feeding Alhan in my bedroom. I had to pull the nipple away from him which normally he wouldn't have liked but he was already asleep.

I didn't bother changing my appearance and went down to see her in sweatpants and a big t-shirt after placing the baby in his crib.

“Hi, Maria. Nice to see you again.” I lied with a fake smile.

I'm sure the reasons I didn't like her were obvious. I already had a terrible impression of her from our first encounter and the way she constantly judged me, mostly my looks, was dissuading.

In short, she's a bitch.

Her eyes scanned my outfit with a silent distaste. “Hello, Alyssa. Hope you don't mind my surprise visit, I can see you weren't expecting anyone.”

I ignored her jab at my casual outfit and took a seat on a nearby couch. “Well, it was definitely a surprise but I'm glad you came.”

I wasn't. I would've been happier seeing Steven, Nathan's father, as I didn't really have anything against the man having barely had a conversation with him.

“I had to come see you, I'm glad I did.” She replied. “You look dreadful.”

I knew I didn't and even if I did, I couldn't care less, it wasn't as if I was going anywhere.

“You obviously need a day at the spa and some time in a hair and nail salon.”

“And you need a better attitude but you don't hear me saying anything.” I retorted with an eye-roll.

The woman raised her eyebrows in question. “Excuse me?”

“Nothing.”

“I'm only trying to assist you since you're clearly too blind to see how terrible you look.”

Don't let her get to you, you're beautiful. I said in my mind as an effort to block her negative words.

Before either of us could say anything, Sophia strolled in casually. She ignored Maria's presence and headed my way.

“Alyssa, I have to go to the cafe for a few hours, will you be okay without me?” My mother-in-law ask compassionately.

I flashed a smile at her to ease her worry. “Of course. I'm pretty sure I can manage on my own for a couple of hours, go.”

Even as she knew I could take care of Alhan while she wasn't there, she would always be concerned whenever she had to leave at times that Nathan wasn't be home.

We shared a brief hug and she moved to leave but stopped at the voice of the other woman in the room.

“Has she been the one taking care of you? No wonder you look so beat up.” Maria sneered.

“What was that?” Sophia turned around.

“I'm just saying, it's obvious by the poor girl's looks that you haven't been helping out at all. Look her messy her hair is and how exhausted she is.” The woman gestured to me.
