I am running late. The Roman showers are better than a spa and after being in the wilderness for weeks it feels like heaven. Sadly, those showers are the reason why I am late. I couldn't bring myself to get out of them. Now my lazyness is going to cost me because I doubt that Reyna will find that an appropriate excuse. Another non-excuse is this armor Andy gave me. It weighs almost twice my body weight and running in it is a trial. Not paying attention, I run right through a lare.

"Hey! Watch out!"

"Sorry!" I yell behind me.

The barracks are not that far away from the showers but when I say I'm late I really mean that when I get there it will be over. Ahead of me campers are in lines dressed in full Roman armor, like I was. Pole bearers are standing in front wearing a lion skin cape and holding golden rods with matching golden animals on top. Reyna is walking up and down the isle between the lines in her pegasus who is a peanut butter color.

"Clover, good to see you," she was scary enough on the ground who was the idiot who gave her a pegasus.

"I'm sorry," I say trying to ignore the hundreds of kids staring at me. She turned her hard glare back on the crowd.

"This is Clover Daniels. She seeks to join the legion. What do the auguries say?"

Octavian steps forward with his chin held high, a king in his castle. "The auguries reveal a sense of caution, but have allowed her to join the legion. She is qualified to serve!"

"Ave! Hail!" they all shout, waving weapons in the air.

Octavian takes another step closer to me. "Do you have any credentials, letters of recomendation?"

I hate his pale, cold eyes. I can almost see how many secrets he has hidden behind them. How do these people trust him? Can't they see through his facade?"

"No, I do not."

"Will any legionairs stand for her?" Reyna calls from a top her steed.

A guy from the cohort with the eagle standard steps forward. "I will stand for her," I look closer. Shawn, the guy who wants nothing to do with me, was the one standing for me.

Reyna eyes him. "Does the Fifth agree to this decision?"

A big guy with curly black hair looks at Shawn, sending him a slight nod.

"Congratulations, Clover Daniels. You stand on Probatio. You will be given a tablet with your name and cohort. In one year's time, or as you complete an act of valor, you will become a full member of the Twelth Legion Fulminata. Serve Rome, obey the rules of the legion, and defend the camp with honor. Senatus Populousqe Romanus!"

Cheers radiat through the streets. It was a great feeling, but I feel like I didn't earn it

Reyna speaks again. "Centurions, you and your troops have one hour for dinner. Then we will meet on the Field of Mars. The Second and Fourth will defend. The First, Third, and Fifth will attack. Good Fortune!"

Someone walks up handing me my tablet. I place it on the gold and opal necklace my dad had given me.

Dad! I haven't called him since I got here! I can't believe I forgot about having a dad. How hard was I hit on the head?

I quiet my inner panic. I can call him when I am alone.

Walking faster, I catch up with Shawn. "Why did you stand for me?"

He didn't turn his head. "Because I owed you."

I rake, my now clean, blonde hair to the side. "Owed me for what?"
