So quests seem to be a big deal to the Romans but I just can't figure out why. It all seems pretty simple. Follow Shawn, block out Andy's incessant talking, don't draw too much attention. I could get used to this.
"Hey, earth to Clover."
My eyes lift to meet Shawn's beautiful ones. He has been a jerk from day one and there is always the feeling of something being off about him, but he is adorable and I can't help but to crush on him. Everything about him. From the freckle on his ear to a scar running a short length down his neck. He is a hot warrior that both intrigues and frightens me. "Yeah?" I finally reply after realizing I am staring.
He points off in front of us where an old leather thing with wings stands in a crowd of people near a coffee shop. I can't quite understand why a monster needs coffee but I guess they need a little boost in the morning as well. "What is it?"
Andy peeks over my shoulder then whispers so he can barely be heard. "A fury, three of them have been hanging around since the son of Neptune appear almost a month ago. We keep killing them but they just reform."
I twist my ring as a sort of nervous habit and my sword shoots up into my clammy hand. Maybe it senses the tension inside of me. Just watching the monsters snake hair wriggle makes an unnerved tingle go through my spine. "What do we do?"
"Come on." Shawn leads the way, taking us into a large crowd of people so that we will blend in. Out of sight out of mind.
There is a sharp inhale behind me before a woman's screechy voice shrieks, "Daughter of Hercules!"
My sword hand shakes with the anticipation of battle, something I don't want anything to do with. Please. Please just ignore me. A talon like hand grips my shoulder and jerks me back. The only thing that saves my neck (literally) are my reflexes which snap me into action. My hand grips Two Face tight before slashing it at the hag. Blood splatters everywhere when one of her arms goes flying off. The pedestrians around us stare wide eyed but don't seem to be afraid. I wish I knew what they were seeing...
"Ah!" The fury yells in anger, swiping at me with her one good arm.
I squeal when her sharp nails scrape through my shirt. "Ow! Hey!" Blood leaks down my shoulder as I lunge and drive my sword through her. She disappears in a shower of gold dust. My heart pounds in my skull. I killed something. That thought makes me want to throw up what is in my stomach. Andy skids in front of me and starts kicking the monsters dust around. Blood is splattered on his face and clothes though I don’t think any of it is his. “Run. Run!”
He shoves me forward and follows behind me. I search wildly for the son of Mercury only to see him holding off two out of the three furies. They reform faster than we can run. “Shawn!” I slow my pace, ready to turn around for him.
“Go! I’ll catch up!” He yells and swings his sword.
It takes a lot more effort to leave him behind than it does to run through the streets. What worries me is Andy falling behind and wheezing. I have to grab his arm and start pulling him in order to speed him up. His arm is cold even though it feels like a hundred degrees. His face is flushed, breathing getting worse. “Andy? Are you okay?”
“Feel…bad…” He mumbles as he closes his eyes and topples forward.
“Crap crap crap!” I slip my arms through his and catch him, barely. He weighs a lot. A groan escapes my lips as I drag him along the side walk. So. Heavy!
“She isn’t much to look at, is she?” The fury I swear I turned to dust floats in front of me with her two sisters.
“Not whole either. Broke. Very broken.” They circle us, beady eyes finding my weakness and faults.
I try to keep my sword up but it is impossible with Andy’s weight on my arms. “Get out of here! Can’t you see you’ve caused enough trouble?!”
The third one smiles wickedly. “Ah, but there is no such thing as too much trouble.”
“What do you think we would get for her taking her to the Mistress?”
“I don’t know but I am willing to find out.”
My fingers unzip Andy’s back pack and dig around for anything that could save me from this situation. “So um.. have any of you uh.. ever been to Hawaii?”
Their snake hair hisses. “Of course not! Such a horrendous place!”
My hand grips warm, round glass. I can’t tell what it is but something inside me knows it is a weapon. What will it do? I guess I’ll find out. I wait for them to engross themselves in an argument before flinging the object at them. The glass shatters and sprays green fire all over the three women like beasts. They scream and swat at their burning clothing. They fall into smoldering dust to reveal Shawn with a raised sword facing where their backs were. He gapes at me, hesitantly lowering his sword.
“Where… where did you get Greek fire?” His accusing look makes me want to dig a hole and live in it. He makes me feel guilty about something I shouldn’t. It wasn’t mine. I may be half Greek but that doesn’t mean that the Greek fire belongs to me… though it does seem logical. “Never mind, we don’t have time.” He takes Andy from me, hefting him over his shoulder. “Fill me in on the way there.”
