[ Thank you for reading! Apologies on the late update, I accidentally wrote 5k and decided to split up chapters last minute. ]

Brockport was a shithole, but arguably one of the most beautiful shitholes she'd ever worked in. The climate was tepid, absolutely peak around August before slowly declining into a horrendous mix of cold air and snow before restarting again the following March. She knew within the next few months she'd be saying Sayonara fuckers, and leaving town without a beat. For now the harbor access that the Brockport Naval Base had was second to none, she could come and go as she pleased without suspicion, and could make easy money slinging drinks to the many men and women who frequented the port. Easy money, easy job, no ties to cut or people to let down, it was perfect.

Amila was in a routine, she would find a harbor she fancied, pick up a menial under-the-books job, and quietly steal from the patrons, occasionally having to murder or maim if needed. Maine was quiet and beautiful, but she was craving somewhere with warmer waters, she just needed a little more cash and she could live a bit more comfortably. Being a seawitch wasn't all it was cracked up to be, she still sought out conventional comforts, unfortunately, most of those were absurdly expensive. Amila's life had been much less complex just a few years ago, she had a real job, one that her parents were proud of, and a pension. Now when she thinks about how close she was to having the normal American life, she lets out an audible gag. No, things were better this way, no strings to tie her down, no worrisome friends, and what family was left hadn't contacted her in years. The freedom to live or die whenever she wanted was intoxicating, and doing it alone? Even better.

Nothing would be important enough to take that from her, besides, who could love a monster? An underwater breathing, hydrokinetic sea witch, with a bad attitude and an inter-dimensional sea demon lurking inside her? It had been tough, the more people she trusted the more she was ostracized. More judgmental little fuckers, who would try to use her for her abilities, and when she became too powerful, would red label her a beast. She was only 28 and had lived a thousand lives, each more depressing than the last, it had taken her years to become this guarded, she refused to let herself down and become vulnerable. Not again.
