I don't think waking up has ever been less annoying than it was today. The sky was bluer, the sun was shinier, even the goddamn dog barking next door sounded way less annoying than usual. 11:00 in the morning never felt so good. Then I remembered why. I have a date. With Yamaguchi. In twenty minutes.

     Wait...

Twenty minutes?! It takes me twelve just to walk to his house! I can't be late to our first date! One that I asked him out on!

I jumped out of bed, getting dressed as quickly as I could. I packed my things into my bag while brushing my teeth, and checked my phone while I was combing my hair. While I was trying my best to put on my shoes and walk out the door simultaneously, my glasses fell of my face and on the porch. And when I went to scoop them up, I tripped.

      Snap!

My glasses broke in two. I have another pair stuffed away somewhere, but there is no way I'll get to Yamaguchi's in time if I go looking for them. So, instead, I committed to being practically blind for the rest of the day.

The entire walk to Yamaguchi's was nerve-wracking. We'd been friends for so long that it would be weird for me to act formal, but we've only been potential-maybe-future boyfriends for like two days so it would be weird for me to act like nothing has changed. When I reached Yamaguchi's door, I tried not to think too hard, opting to walk right up and knock. And it took maybe five seconds for the door to swing open.

"Kei, my sweet boy! What brings you over, hon? I don't care, just come in, come in!" It was Yamaguchi's mom, clad in a night gown, hair frazzled up as if she were struck by lightning. Her coffee cup was steaming, and it was obvious she just woke up. As much as I love her, I was not at all prepared for an encounter with her today.

"Hi, Ms. Yamaguchi, I'm... Uh- I'm going out with Tadashi today, is he up?" The butterflies in my stomach were distracting me to the point that I could hardly form sentences, and there was no way I'd be able to last in conversation much longer.

"Off so soon? I guess that makes sense, poor Tadashi has been rushing around the house all morning, back and forth from room to room, I honestly think he gets it from me. I mean, look at me! I hardly just got up and I'm still all over the place!"

No one rambles better that Ms. Yamaguchi, that's for sure.

"No wonder he's all excited, though, you were coming! Oh how I miss having you boys together more often when you were younger! You were just attached at the hip, weren't you! How sweet it is that you are both still by each others side, I just can't thank you enough for everything you've done for my little ma-"

"Mom! Leave Tsukki be, I don't think he can even keep up with you right now!" Yamaguchi exclaimed, trying to put his left shoe on and walk at the same time, "We'll talk to you when we get back, ok?"

With that, he smiled at me, grabbed my hand, and whisked me out the door again, slamming it shut, then stopping to tie his shoe.

"Sorry about her, I woke her up while I was brushing my teeth, and she's been really talkative this morning," Yamaguchi said, trying his best to cut through the awkward smog surrounding us. don't get me wrong, I appreciated the attempt. We'd know each other since we were young, but this change was uncharted territory that made things really weird.

"I don't care, Yams. I spent as much time with her as I did with my actual mom for like three years, this is nothing new."

"Well, I know, but I was just excited to, I don't know, be alone for a while? It's like I don't really want anyone cutting into our time, even her," Yamaguchi blushed. As stood up, he met my gaze, his mossy oak eyes pulling me in. Literally. I didn't realize it, but I was physically leaning in to admire his eyes. Mine were simply not strong enough to see every flake of green sprinkled within the dark sepia of his irises- without the help of my glasses, at least.
