The way home was quiet. They only talked if they needed to. A few 'thank you's here and there but nothing more.
The ex assassin and the genius daughter were finally home outside the Avengers compound.
Elizabeth felt nothing looking at the building. She felt nothing as she thought about the members who lived inside. The only thing on her mind was Bucky and the look on her Mother's face right before dying. She was always closer with her then she was with Howard. Maybe it was a girl thing? Or maybe he was just always too busy for her.
But Bucky? He's just back to being his quiet self, bottling up the emotion he feels and keeping the ice stare on his face.
Stepping inside the compound everyone was in the living room waiting for their arrival.
"Liz!" Steve quickly rose and ran over to Elizabeth, embracing her into a tight hug. "You're alright."
Elizabeth nodded and smiled. She didn't see her brother with the team so she shot a quick glance at Bucky before taking her suitcase and going to her room.
"What's that about?" Natasha stood up and walked to Bucky.
"Nothing. I'll handle it, but there were two flash drives missing. Mine and Elizabeth's. I think someone took them so try and track them or whatever."
Steve saw the concerned look on his friend's face and wanted to reassure him that everything will be alright but he knew he couldn't lie to Bucky like that. So, he took a step closer to him and hugged his friend. "What's wrong with her?"
"I said I'll handle it, Steve." Bucky broke free from Steve's arms and raced to his room but decided to make a quick stop first.
Knock Knock
"Come in."
"I uh- I told the team our flash drives are missing." Bucky gently placed Elizabeth's flash drive onto her night stand and turned around.
"No."
"No?" Bucky turned around in puzzlement.
"No! You don't get to walk away from this, Bucky. I- I-'' Elizabeth cut herself off and put her hands in fist, putting all the pressure at the edge of her fingertips. Her flesh was softly pierced by her fingernails when all the glass in the room shattered.
"Who said I wanted to walk away?"
"I heard your thoughts! And, Sergeant Barnes, your feelings got in the way of your mission so what are you going to do about it?" Elizabeth snapped. Everything she bottled up from the moment they walked out of the compound finally broke free.
Her feet stomped across the hallway, making her way back downstairs but Bucky followed her down the stairs and into the kitchen where the team was near.
"I'm going to fix my mistake." Dumbass move, Barnes
"Mistake?! You think that was all a mistake?!"
"No- no. Elizabeth." Bucky couldn't stop himself from lowering his voice and taking both her hands in awe. "I love you, Liz. I love you and if there was a way to turn back time and have me toured instead of you I would. But I can't."
"Why?" The tears started and her voice began to break. "Wh-why do you wanna go? To-to get your mind fixed? You're fine."
"Elizabeth?" Tony and Thor walked in from the other side of the compound. They were most likely in his lab working on something.
Bucky was puzzled. "Killgrave took you under my watch. I was supposed to protect you."
"But I'm fine. See? I'm here. I'm f-"
"What?" Tony cut Elizabeth off and pulled all his attention on the soldier. "What did you say happened, Barnes?"
Steve stepped in, blocking Tony from Bucky. "It was nothing, Tony. Liz is fine."
"You knew about this and didn't tell me?" Tony spat. He made sure to keep his voice at a certain level though because Peter was sleeping.
Bucky's body slipped between Steve and Tony. He grabbed his duffel bag and started for the door.
"HEY!" Elizabeth yelled at Bucky but he just kept on walking. "Bucky. You promised me that you would protect me!"
His iced eyes shot her a cold glare from over his broad shoulder "Well how did that work out so far?"
"Don't do this, Bucky. Please..."
Steve took a step towards Bucky. Looking him in the eyes. No one really understood the connection they held but... it seems to lighten Bucky's mood. "I hope you find what you're looking for, pal."
He gave Steve a quick smile and took a quick look around the room "I'll see you guys around."
The door slammed shut and Elizabeth's heart shattered. She ran to the door, opening it to an empty front. No one was there. No vehicle was there. Bucky was gone. But he'd gotten his redemption because in that moment she'd forgotten what Bucky had done. She forgave him.
But it was too late.
