Why would you do this to me? Of all times, why the hell would you pick now?
I found myself looking around the halls full of pushy, arrogant teenagers desperately lost on my first day of school at Granger High. There were so many people pushing and shoving through the halls I thought I would faint. And then die.
My mom and I had just moved here two weeks ago, and my best friend was supposed to be living with me, but her mom threw a hissy fit when she didn’t call one time and made her come home. She’d be coming back in a few weeks, but that was a million years to a girl like me in a new place.
I was a hermit crab.
There was absolutely no way to get me to go in public without:
Crying
Majorly regretting being born
Being extremely pissed at even the sun for shining
Music.
Music was my best friend, aside from Becca, full name Rebecca Melody Lewis. She and I had met in second grade through a common hatred for someone who, by the horrid piece of paper claiming my sister had married her cousin, was my new relative.
Did I mention I tend to over explain things when I’m nervous?
I sucked in a deep breath and searched desperately for my first class on my map, coming up with a loss as people pushed and shoved, making my ugly nerd-glasses fall to the floor and get crumpled by feet. I sighed and thanked everything that is good I had contacts in my backpack.
There was a sudden hum from the overhead intercom, and a song I knew well was playing. Everyone in the halls started turning and entering classes, saying goodbye, shoving and as soon as I noticed I was on the wrong end of the building for first period, I was shoved into a row of lockers as two identical boys frantically ran through the hallways laughing and shouting.
“Give it back, Carter! I need that!”
“You wish!”
“Oh my goodness. Kane, Carter, get your little red riding asses back here! You hurt the new girl!” A boy with red and black hair knelt down beside me, and offered his hand. I took it reluctantly, and he helped me to my feet with ease. “I’m Masen, and these are the evil twins who think the school is a playground.”
“Oh, but you know you love us,” the one called Carter said with a wink as both twins slinked their arms around Masen’s shoulders.
“Yeah, yeah,” Masen said, brushing them off. “So this one’s Carter, and this knuckle head over here is Kane.”
“Who says ‘Knuckle Head’?” a forth boy with light brown hair and gorgeous blue eyes said.
“Well… I do…” Masen said quietly.
“I’m Damien. And you are?”
“D-D-Delilah…” I said, mentally cursing myself for stuttering.
“Well you heard the music, right Dee?” Kane said.
“Um… Yes?”
Brilliant answer.
“Well then where should you be?” Carter asked. They crossed their arms in sync and looked at me expectantly.
“I-… Um…. Science Lab?”
“Which one?” yet another amazingly gorgeous boy asked.
“Um… Room 274?”
“Oh… Then why are you on this side of the school?”
