"The world is cold, harsh, it tears you down, breaks you down, shatters your hopes, kills your dreams, burns your desire to live. Many are those who wake up strong in those broken places, they are indestructible. They get up from their weak state and get tougher, and so the world becomes warmer, they collect their soul's pieces, amass their hopes, revive their dreams, and make their desire to live burn brighter."

Y/n quickly closed her book as she heard a commotion in the hallways, and as if on queue, the pager in her pocket started beeping, signalling an emergency.

"Code blue ! Code Blue !" The small device in her scrub showed that a patient had either a cardiopulmonary arrest or has troubles breathing, she immediately threw her book on her bed before jumping off and running out of her room.

These incidents were quite frequent , but yesterday a huge mall was under a terrorist attack, a lot of people died, and more were in a critical condition, and since the hospital where y/n works is near, most of them were rushed there.

Today was supposedly her rest day, but she had no time to rest, her schedule changed and now she is on a 48 hours shift. It was tiring but she got to rest for an hour or two so she regained her energy quickly.

Speaking of energy, Y/n was quite the energetic one, she didn't hesitate to save anyone no matter what, she didn't care if her superiors were harsh or rude towards her, she came her to save people. That's what made her a hardworking type, and that's what also made her the top of her class.

And by the mere age of 27 years old, she was already a surgeon, rocking in her own field, ready to save the world by a single scratch from her scalpel.  But right now, all what she had to do was assist the code team in their resuscitation.

She disinfected her hands, wore her gloves, and got into the patient's room, getting ready to perform CPR on the patient after checking that his heartbeats were irregular.

"one, two, three." she kept on counting, keeping her CPR steady as she repeated the cycle 30 times before noticing that his heartbeats were still irregular.

"Get the defibrillator." She ordered as the nearby nurse hurriedly charged it before giving it back to Y/n, who placed one electrode just below the patient's right clavicle, while she placed the other one below and to the left of the pectoral muscle on their left-hand side.

The defibrillator detected the frail heartbeat of the patient and immediately instructed y/n to press on the shock button.

"Clear !" Said Y/n with a loud voice, instructing anyone who has any physical contact with the patient to get away from him.

She administered additional shocks before the patient showed signs of restored heart functions which made y/n sight in relief before getting away from him. More doctors arrived in the room, in order to run more tests on him.

Y/n removed her gloves, throwing them in the trash can before exiting the room, planning to sleep for few hours, at least until another emergency erupts out of nowhere. Y/n lost in her thoughts, failed to notice the small group sitting on the hospital benches outside the room?

"Doctor, please, tell me that my boyfriend is fine." Said a frail voice beside her.

Immediately, Y/n lifted her head, only to meet a woman around her age with a face full of tears, she must have heard the commotion in the room.

"Don't worry, everything is under control. We restored his heartbeats and we will run few tests on him again. You can visit him probably in the afternoon, he might be awake by then." She smiled tiredly at the blond-haired woman, She then looked at the others sitting beside her.

They truly looked frightening, they all had tattoos as if they were part of the Yakuza, well at least that's what most of the people would say, especially in Japan. But Y/n thought they were cool, she herself wanted to have a tattoo but she couldn't, that would prevent her from working in a hospital. Plus that would scare her patients to death.

"See I told you Ken-chin would be alright, He's strong as fuck !" the black-haired man's statement made Y/n chuckle.

'Yeah, he truly was a resilient one' he was stabbed thrice, shot 5 times and had one cardiac arrest, but he still resisted, as if his will to live was stronger than his will to die. Y/n was the doctor that performed the surgery on him when he first arrived in the hospital. It was a 7 hours surgery, it was tiring one, and despite being a huge success, that left Y/n concerned about her patient's health.

"Are you the doctor that saved Ken-chin ?"Asked the same man.

"Yes I am, is there anything you need to ask about ?" Questioned Y/n, removing her hands from her scrub.

"No, I just wanted to thank you." He smiled sheepishly, his smile made him look young.

"Oh you don't need to, that's my job." Chirped Y/n before giving the girl her handkerchief, helping her to sit down"

"What is your name miss ?" asked Y/n while looking at the woman in front of her.

"I'm Emma, Sano Emma. Thank you for handing me your handkerchief, I'll wash It and bring it back to you."

"You don't need to Sano-san, you can keep it." Y/n said before getting up and going to her room, she wanted to get her beauty sleep, and quickly.

That is until she heard Emma's voice calling her.

"By the way doctor, you look very cute." Said Emma as she wiped her tears before hiding the handkerchief in her handbag, running after Y/n.

Emma's statement made Y/n embarrassed, she never knew how to react when she got complimented, so she brushed it off by thanking her. She had a discussion with the girl for a bit, before accompanying her back to her friends.

"Oi Emma don't wander on your own next time, you scared us." said a boy with long lilac hair, scolding the small girl beside Y/n.

"I'm sorry Mitsuya, the doctor is super cute so I wanted to chitchat with her for a bit." Apologised Emma before running beside her friends. "If you're free anytime Y/n-chan, do you want to hang out with me ?"

Y/n didn't feel like accepting at first, since she didn't want to waste the spare time she got to sleep, but she didn't know why she eventually agreed by nodding. She found herself exchanging her phone number with Emma.

Usually Y/n would be professional, having a small chat with the patient's relatives to talk about the patient's health, and that was It. She never saw a dying patient before her eyes, so she never had to crack the painful truth in front of anyone, and that made her really proud of herself.

But Emma's bubbly personality somehow got her, she decided to set aside her professional persona and act as a normal young adult with the girl, which made her earn a possibly new friend.
