"She's awake? Did you call me?" Sad eyes, Gabriel and I rushed to the front desk of the hospital.
The receptionist startled up from her computer to look at us. She stared wide-eyed at my face and I stared at her questioningly, "Hey I asked you a question."
The woman stammered overwhelmed.
A nurse walked up to us, "Mr. Diaz?" I nodded to the woman, "Follow me please, but the others need to stay in the waiting room." The woman looked at Gabriel and Sad eyes.
The two groaned and the woman walked slowly to the patient rooms.
As I was about to follow her Gabriel pulled me to him by my sleeve, "Homie, take this," he shoved a tissue in my hand and pointed to my face, "and wipe the blood off your face." He laughed and sat down in the waiting room with Sad eyes.
I wiped my face with the tissue as I followed the nurse. The woman stopped at a room and gestured to me to go in, " She shouldn't overstress herself, she needs rest. Her mother will be here in a few minutes."
"I understand." I turned the door knob and stepped into the room. The nurse nodded and walked down the hall.
Since the day the incident happened, I was here every day to check on her and when I went to the hospital that evening with her in the ambulance I was registered as her second contact.
I kind of threatened the people at the hospital to let me know immediately if she woke up or if anything was wrong.
I walked past the bathroom into the room. Everything was white and she was lying on the bed in the middle of the room.
Hooked up to all those tubes, but still the prettiest person I had ever seen.
She looked out the window and when she heard footsteps coming to the bed she turned to me, "Oscar." She smiled up at me.
"Hola hermosa".
I sat down on the edge of the bed and pulled her to my chest to hug her.
"What happened?" she mumbled against my chest and I pulled back to look at her.
"What do you remember?" I pushed a few strands of hair out of her face.
She thought for a moment, "We were at Olivia's quinceañera and-" She stared at me with widened eyes, "Oh no."
I held her tightly, "It's okay, you're fine."
She took a deep breath, "How long-" I reached for her hand, "About two weeks."
She gasped, "I've been here for two weeks?" I nodded and she ran her hand through her hair in confusion.
"The doctors took the bullet out of your chest, it missed your heart and other organs, but there were complications and they had to put you in an artificial coma until your body regenerated."
She nodded, "Was anyone else hurt?"
The girl woke up after two weeks in a coma and asked me if others were hurt? I didn't want to tell her so soon.
I stroked her hand reassuringly with my thumb, "Ruby was in the hospital for a while, but he's been back home since last week and Ol-" I interrupted myself.
She looked at me questioningly, "What won't you tell me?" I looked out the window. "Oscar!" her commanding voice made my head snap back to her.
"Olivia didn't make it."
It was silent in the room for a while, no one dared to say anything.
She looked at the ground, "Did you find him?"
"Latrelle?" She nodded, suppressing a sob. "We looked for him for a while until someone sent us to one of the safe houses. We found him there and he got what he deserved."
"Good." She looked me in the eyes.
I had expected another reaction from her, more like angry screaming or a slap in the face, but she just sat there.
I opened my mouth to ask her something when she interrupted me, "Will you lie down with me?"
I wordlessly put aside a few tubes that were spread all over the bed and lay down next to her. She nuzzled her head against my chest and I rested my chin on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry," I murmured. She looked up at me, "Don't be sorry, you didn't do anything wrong."
I shook my head, I definitely did something wrong. I promised her that no one would ever hurt her. And here she is lying next to me in the hospital bed with a gunshot wound.
"I should have seen him. I shouldn't have let you go. You almost died, don't you understand? It's my fault."
She caressed my cheek with her hand, "Don't say that, it's not your fault. I'm the one who walked in front of a gun." She smiled at me sadly.
I just stared at her, "You threw yourself in front of my brother, the bullet would have hit him."
She was about to say something else when the door was ripped open.
"Well, hello you two lovebirds." Gabriel stepped into the room with Sad eyes behind him, who had an annoyed look on his face.
Gabriel looked down at Y/n with a smile, "I missed you, it was so hard to deal with all these idiots alone." He gestured wildly with his hands in the air, "Always so violent." He walked around the bed and hugged her. She giggled, "Hello to you too, Gabriel."
I turned to Sad eyes, who waved at her. "How the hell did you guys get in here?"
He shrugged, "We were just having a nice chat with the nurse and she let us in."
Gabriel gave him an amused look. What did the two of them do?
The door opened again and quick footsteps approached the room. "Mom." said Y/n next to me and I slowly got out of bed.
Her mom welcomed her in a bone crushing hug and pressed her head against the worried woman's chest, "You're awake."
"Yeah." My injured girl laughed on the bed.
I looked at the two Santos in the room and pointed toward the door. They followed me and we left the room to give the two ladies some time alone.
