"I think we should end this," Sharlise said softly. She didn't reach out to him. She didn't cry. Saul could not believe the callousness of the woman who had claimed to love him for the past year and a half. Saying the word softly did not make them sting any less.
"I don't want to," he said pleadingly. It was all that would come out. Things had not been going well between them for a while, but none of what had occurred had been either of their faults. Why was he being punished for what he could not control? What argument could he possibly give when there was no room for him reason with her? He looked away from her dark brown eyes as he searched his mind for any reason he could come up with that would convince her to retract her decision.
"You need the space to grow on your own. You have made that very clear in your actions, even if you do not say it. I refuse to be the one holding you back," Sharlise replied, her mouth saying words that seemed to defy every other aspect of her being. Even her stomach rolled in denial of what she was doing.
"I never said you were," Saul countered.
"You didn't have to. What kind of life are we going to live as a married couple when you completely shut me out when things go wrong now? Am I going to be living like I don't have a husband anytime you are stressed out. Am I with you just to be pretty? Do you find me useless when you need help and support? You have made it clear that, regardless of what you say, I am no a priority to you; and that is fine. However, I am not obligated to tolerate it." Sharlise fought to keep her lip from quivering as she spoke. If he saw any sign of weakness, he might continue trying to change her mind.
"Can I have one more chance?" Saul's shoulders were slumped. He sat before his soon to be former lover looking entirely defeated. If she did not want him then he would not force her.
"I already gave you chances," Sharlise whispered. Unable to conceal her emotions any longer she quickly got up and walked out of the room. Both of them had only one thought in mind that became clear among their respective emotional storms
