I hesitantly walked off the old yellow bus. One earbud in and my black duffel bag hanging off my right shoulder.
I squinted at the bright sun, my gaze then wandered the camp and landed on a man with red hair.
He was very tall and thin. He looked about 28, maybe 30 years old and wore a green shirt and a yellow... scarf thingy? I don't know much about summer camps.
"Well hello there new camper! Welcome to Camp Campbell. We are so excited to have you here! Your name is y/n right?" The cheery man spoke.
"Uh yeah, that's me." I said trying to figure out why this guy was so happy to see me.
"Well, my name is David, and I am your Camp counselor! Why don't you follow me to meet your fellow campers!" He motioned me to follow him, the smile never left his face it was almost creepy.
I followed him towards a long line of tents, spaced out by about 15ft. I took my phone out of my pocket to check the time 7:15am.
Jesus I should have slept last night. I thought as I approached the man David who stood waiting for me in front of all the tents. "You ready y/n?" He asked. "I honestly don't care." I said taking out my earbud and shoving it into my pocket with my phone.
"Hey, cheer up. Camp Campbell is amazing! You're gonna have so much fun, I'm sure of it!" David smiled like happiness was the only emotion he could feel. I could tell something was off with him.
"I've never been to a summer camp and I sure as hell never planned to, so excuse me for not bursting with joy when I don't have clue where I am, why I'm here, and how long I'm here." I huffed crossing my arms and turning away from David. "Oh, well why don't you come to the counsellors cabin after you're settled. I can answer any questions you have." David tried not to smile but it was still kinda there.
"I guess." I mumbled. David just nodded and turned back to the tents.
"GOOD MORNING CAMPERS!"
I heard a few teens groaning in annoyance as heads started poking out of tents, but one voice stood out among the groans.
"Shut. the. Fuck up David! It's SATURDAY!"
A boy with thick black hair stepped out of a tent, fists clenched in anger. His blue hoodie and black sweatpants were baggy on him yet he pulled it off. His skin was a light brown with an orange tint, guess he's of Indian descent, though he had no accent. He looked tired beyond repair, even through the anger I could see the bags under his eyes.
"You know what the fuck that means David!? It means you leave us the fuck alon-" the boy stopped talking when he noticed me standing next to David kinda shocked by the way he just mouthed off a counsellor.
A smirk grew on my face as our eyes locked, I was entertained by his dramatics. He looked at David. "Uh... David who the hell is she?" The boy asked, changing his attitude from angry to confused.
"Well, Max first of all language and second this is our newest camper Y/n! I trust that you'll all make her feel welcome." David said enthusiastically.
Everyone was silent until I was tackled to the ground by a short girl with teal hair. "Ahh what the fuck?!" I said while crashing to the ground. I grabbed the girl's arm, spun her around so she laid stomach to the ground, I held her down, my knee against her back and her arm twisted across her body. "And what would your name be?" I asked catching my breath.
"Woah girl, you have to teach me how to do that!" The girl squealed.
I helped her up and shook her hand. "The names Nikki, and you're y/n? I wasn't sure if I heard that right."She said grinning.
I nodded confirming she got my name right.
I looked back to the black-haired boy. "So who's mr. shut the fuck up?" I asked already knowing his name because the counsellor had used it, I just wanted to know who is friends with who at this sketchy camp.
"Oh, that's Max, he's one of my best friends! And over there is Neil, we're kind of a trio." She smiled, placing her hands on her hips.
I nodded looking back up at David who was now holding up a clip board.
"Okay y/n it looks like the only available space is, huh... with Max, are you comfortable with that?" He asked.
"Yeah, I guess it's fine but if he's weird can I just switch with someone?" I asked jokingly.
"Sounds good! Alright then, go get settled and Max, play nice!" David said while leading the other campers over to the Mess Hall.
I walked past the boy who stood outside his tent looking pissed off to be alive.
I sat down on my lame excuse for a bed taking everything in.
"Well at least I won't have to hide all summer." I mumbled under my breath.
"What was that?" A slightly familiar voice spoke while they walked through the tent flaps.
"Oh, uh hey, Max right?" I said scanning him up and down. "Jesus, you know if you stare too long you might turn to stone, just mind your fucking business and I'll mind mine" He scoffed, lying down on his cot. "Look I know you're probably annoyed you have to share your tent now, especially with a girl, but I haven't done anything to piss anyone off yet as far as I'm concerned so maybe, just maybe you don't have to be a total dick to me?" I said, trying not to sound too cocky.
He smirked, sitting up from his bed as our eyes locked. "Alright then new kid." He shrugged looking away.
A few moments of silence passed until Max reached into a backpack under his bed and pulled out a notebook. He went to walk out of the tent but stopped at the entrance. He took a glanced back at me over his shoulder. "This camp is total bullshit, it's a money scam, and at least 5 people died here. Just letting you know... Y/n." He continued out of the tent.
My jaw dropped for a second until I just laughed, somehow I didn't give a shit that the camp was a scam, or that people died here. I was more focused on that fact that Max cared to tell me.
I knew this kid was going to be difficult to figure out, but I could tell there was something different about him, something that intrigued me. I started setting my stuff up around my cot and mumbled to myself. "This is going to be one hell of a summer."
Time skip— one hour.
I thought about what it was going to be like sharing a tent with a boy and an easily annoyed one on top of that.
He seems to have anger issues, but what if he has a good reason? Why was this jaded teenage boy so bitter? The question stood steadily in my mind, a real nuisance as it remained one I could not answer.
I decided to change into more comfortable pants but as I searched my bag I saw I was severely lacking in the clothing department.
Of course I grab all the underwear and socks I own but only two pairs of pants, three shirts and one extra hoodie. fuck my life.
I heard a bell ring and a cheery voice yell "BREAKFAST!" I had a rough idea where to go. This place wasn't too hard to figure out.
I walked into a building labeled Mess Hall. As I stepped inside every head in the room turned, I continued straight to the back and pretended not to notice all the eyes on me but in reality, it made me really nervous. I grabbed a tray of food and walked over to an empty table. I started moving the food around with a fork not feeling hungry.
"Hey new kid!" The girl I knew as Nikki yelled across the room waving at me. I turned my attention to her, and she motioned me to come sit with them. I looked at the table and saw the nerdy kid Neil and my roommate Max arguing next to Nikki. I shrugged, picking up my tray and made my way over.
I went to sit down. The only empty spot was next to Max, We were across from Nikki and Neil. Max and Neil stopped talking and looked at me confused until they realized this was Nikki's doing.
"So, Y/n, how did you find out about this place? Do you go on adventures? What do you like? Oh and how many pets do you have?" Nikki stammered quickly.
"Oh uh, well I kinda just got told to pack up a bag, then I got put onto a bus no questions asked.... it wasn't until I got a few words out of that creepy Quarter Master guy that I found out I was going to a graveyard of a summer camp. That guy definitely kills people. (Nikki and Max slightly laughed) If you count bussing and walking to different cities an adventure then yeah I guess I do go on adventures.
A-And I like music. I guess I don't really find anything interesting." I said with a nervous laugh scratching the back of my neck. I felt like I was being too awkward.
Max put down his coffee and stared at my arms. I didn't realize but I was scratching them over the fabric of my hoodie. I stopped and hid my arms under the table.
Max looked away but kept glancing at me and seemed almost suspicious of me.
Nikki started talking about her love for nature and tried asking me more random questions.
Neil was showing interest in the conversation, but I could tell he was skeptical of newcomers just like Max.
"So... how exactly did you get put onto the bus? Are your parents nuts? Why did no one tell you where you were going?" Neil suddenly questioned.
I shrugged. "What can I say? Shit just happens sometimes Neil." I said forcing myself to look happy.
